Chapter 43 - The Ghost Brother’s Ledger

"I will let that drive burn to ash before I give you access to those accounts," I said, meeting Julian’s pale eyes without blinking.

Julian did not display anger. He did not draw a weapon or threaten torture. Instead, he pulled out a brushed-steel chair, turned it around, and sat down, resting his forearms across the backrest. He looked at me with the detached curiosity of a surgeon examining an interesting pathology.

"Do you know why Jonathan lost to you, Evelyn?" he asked quietly. "Because he treated wealth as a trophy. He believed that accumulating billions gave him the right to exist above the moral and economic laws of the world. He was a narcissist who mistook leverage for power."

"And you don't?" Clara spat, her arms crossed, her body positioned between Julian and me.

"I don't care about wealth," Julian said plainly. "Money is an illusion invented to keep populations docile. What matters is the architecture of debt. The Duncan Foundation does not hold funds to spend them; it holds debt instruments to dictate the foreign policies of developing states, to control deep-water mineral corridors, to manage energy grids. When you arrested Jonathan and exposed the Montreal accounts, you didn't free anyone. You simply created an economic vacuum. Twelve sovereign funds are currently facing structural collapse because the underlying collateral is frozen in that cylinder."

He leaned forward, tapping the scanning cradle on the metal table.

"If that data self-purges, three national central banks will fail before the markets open on Monday morning. Millions of ordinary people—pensioners, small business owners, families who have never heard the name Duncan—will be wiped out in an instant. Jonathan built the machine so that if his heart stopped, the guillotine fell on everyone. You think you’re fighting a criminal empire, Evelyn. In reality, you are holding the pin of a global economic grenade."

"He’s lying," Clara said, her voice taut. "It’s a standard Duncan bluff. They manufacture a systemic threat to force compliance. We saw it in Monaco. We saw it in Reykjavik."

"Check the terminal," Julian replied calmly, gesturing toward the tactical display. "The live data feed is unencrypted. Read the secondary debt tranches linked to the registry’s safeguard protocol."

I stepped past Clara, my eyes scanning the glowing green columns of financial code mirrored on the naval server. The algorithmic structure was undeniably real. Jonathan had wired the sovereign registry directly into an automated liquidation cascade. If the decryption cycle failed or was terminated prematurely, the system would flood the global interbank exchange with trillions in fraudulent short positions, crashing the sovereign credit ratings of half a dozen allied nations.

"He built a doomsday switch," I whispered, the horror rising in my throat.

"He built an insurance policy," Julian corrected. "Now, place your hand on the cradle, Evelyn. We unlock the tranches, redirect the liquidation vectors into our secure holding trusts, and prevent the collapse. You survive. Clara survives. The world keeps turning."

"And the empire remains in your hands," I said.

"Better my hands than an uncontrolled detonation," Julian said. "You have sixty seconds before the decryption protocol reaches the threshold where the failsafe arms itself."
