Chapter 32 - The Villa of Glass and Bone

Clara did not sit. She remained planted in the center of the Persian rug, her posture rigid, her hands held casually at her sides in the posture of a trained operative prepared to draw or strike. "You watched," Clara said, her voice cold enough to drop the room’s temperature. "You watched while Jonathan had my brakes cut in Monaco. You watched while I drowned in my own blood on the rocks of Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat."

Victoria set her teacup down on the silver saucer with a soft, precise *clink*. Her pale blue eyes lifted, scanning Clara from head to toe with the clinical appraisal of a gemologist inspecting an uncut diamond.

"I didn't merely watch, my dear. I ensured the rescue diver who pulled you from that burning wreckage was on my payroll, not Jonathan’s," Victoria said smoothly. "Had Jonathan found you breathing that night, he would have had you smothered with a hospital pillow before the salt water had even dried on your skin. I provided the safe house in Montreal. I funded the cipher network you used to dismantle his shell companies. Jonathan was an arrogant, theatrical little boy who believed power was something you flaunted at galas and flashed on Bloomberg terminals. He was reckless. He was loud. And worst of all, he was clumsy."

I stepped forward, my voice cutting through the thick, perfumed silence. "If you wanted him gone, you could have disinherited him. You could have stripped him of his executive authorities with a single board vote. Why use us? Why let him nearly kill Clara, and why let him marry me as a financial shield?"

Victoria smiled—a terrifying, bloodless parting of thin lips. "Because, Evelyn, a mother cannot openly execute her own heir without inviting the scrutiny of the International Monetary Fund and every regulatory hyena from Basel to New York. The Duncan Apex trust was never a standard hedge fund. It was the laundering vessel for thirty-two sovereign families who require complete financial invisibility. Jonathan began using that capital to wage private wars. He lost twelve billion dollars in an unauthorized short against the sovereign debt of two developing nations. He was going to expose us all."

She picked up an ivory letter opener and slid it along the seam of a thick manila folder resting on the table before her.

"You two accomplished what fifty forensic accountants and three intelligence agencies could not: you stripped him down to his bare flesh without implicating the Duncan foundation itself. You made it look like a domestic vendetta. You made it look like the poetic justice of two wronged wives. It was... magnificent."

"We didn't do it for you," Clara spat. "And we didn't do it to preserve your shadow bank."

"Of course you didn't," Victoria replied softly. "You did it for survival. Which brings us to the purpose of our breakfast."

She pushed the folder across the mahogany table. I looked down. Printed across the cover in embossed, blood-red ink were the words: *PROJECT DEEP HORIZON — PROTOCOL ZERO.*

"What is this?" I asked, refusing to touch the paper.

"The coordinates you received on the satellite phone," Victoria explained, leaning back into her cushions. "Jonathan was not entirely stupid. When he realized Clara had survived Montreal and that you, Evelyn, were siphoning his private ledgers, he initiated an automated contingency. He locked eighty percent of the sovereign families' underlying collateral into an air-gapped, cryogenic mainframe buried three thousand meters beneath the sea floor in the Greenland Basin."

Clara frowned. "Why Greenland? The Apex servers were routed through Reykjavik."

"Reykjavik was the mirror, my dear," Victoria said. "Deep Horizon is the vault. And the encryption that locks that collateral can only be undone by two living signatures: Clara’s original marriage certificate hash, and Evelyn’s biometric authorization key from the altar at Saint-Roch."

May you like

A cold tremor ran down my spine. Jonathan hadn’t just married me to hide his money; he had woven my physical existence into the self-destruct mechanism of an international empire.
