Chapter 37 - Bloodline Treason

From the observation gantry directly above the rotunda, a soft, dry clapping echoed through the freezing air.
Victoria Duncan stood behind the reinforced safety rail, looking down at us with the serene, indifferent gaze of a monarch observing prisoners in a bear pit. Flanking her were two of her elite guards, their tactical rifles aimed directly at the back of our heads.
"Jonathan was always so vulgar with his dramatics," Victoria said, her voice amplified through the intercom system. "He never understood that information is only dangerous if you allow someone alive to verify it."
"You knew Vance was already dead," Clara shouted, her weapon tracking up toward the gantry, though she knew the bulletproof barrier would deflect the rounds. "You used us to bypass the automated defenses outside!"
"Of course, my dear," Victoria replied smoothly. "The automated turrets were keyed to Jonathan’s biometric signatures. By walking ahead of me with that ring, Evelyn, you cleared the corridors like a bloodhound. And now, you will both step forward and insert your keys into the console."
"And if we don't?" I asked, stepping beside Clara, my chin lifted. "If we let that clock hit zero, your empire is burned to the ground. You will be arrested before your submarine can even breach the surface."
"If you don't," Victoria said calmly, "I will have my men shoot Clara through both kneecaps. Then I will have them take your hand, Evelyn, sever the finger wearing that band, and press it against the glass myself. The biometric sensor requires pulse and warmth, but modern medical coagulants can keep tissue viable for up to twelve minutes after amputation. I am an old woman, Evelyn. I do not have time for theatrical ultimatums."
One of the guards on the gantry stepped forward, raising his rifle and aiming directly at Clara’s leg.
"Wait!" I shouted, the word tearing from my throat.
Clara grabbed my arm, her fingers digging through the neoprene into my muscle. "Evelyn, don't. She’s going to kill us the second the ledger unlocks. Let the countdown hit zero. Let Jonathan’s dead-man switch take her down with us!"
"I won't let her butcher you," I whispered. Then, looking down at the console, I noticed something Jonathan’s video loop had left on the auxiliary display—a tiny string of code flickering beneath the countdown:
`OVERRIDE_SEED: DUNCAN_APEX_CORPUS_MORTIS`
My mind raced back to the long nights in Jonathan’s library, when I was cataloging his family's ancient corporate archives. *Corpus Mortis* wasn't a banking term. It was the name of the maritime salvage trust his grandfather had established in 1947 to scuttle insured freighters during the war.
It wasn't an override for the decryption. It was a scuttle command for the entire facility.
Jonathan had never planned on letting his mother inherit Deep Horizon if he fell. He had built the vault to be his tomb—and hers.
"Clara," I murmured, keeping my lips barely moving. "When I say turn... turn the second key to the left. Not the right. To the left."
"Evelyn, that reverses the hydraulic seals—" Clara started, then stopped, her eyes widening as the realization hit her.

"Step to the console!" Victoria’s voice cracked like a whip across the metal chamber. "Now!"
