Chapter 5 - The Gathering Storm

By 3:00 a.m., the Moretti mansion was buzzing with quiet, lethal activity.

Heavy black SUVs lined the circular driveway outside, their engines idling in a steady hum that vibrated through the stone walls. Dozens of armed men in dark tactical gear moved through the armory, loading weapons and checking encryption codes on their radios.

I stayed upstairs in the master guest suite, where Alessandro had insisted Emma and I spend the night under double guard.

Emma was resting comfortably on the king-sized bed, her fever completely gone, sleeping soundly under the plush duvet.

I stood by the window, watching the rain continue to fall over the dark estate grounds.

The door behind me clicked open softly.

Alessandro walked into the room. He had changed out of his tuxedo and was now wearing a dark tactical jacket over a black turtleneck, a heavy leather holster strapped beneath his shoulder.

He looked formidable, dangerous, and completely focused.

Yet, when he saw me standing by the window, his expression softened.

“How is she?” he asked quietly, stepping closer.

“She’s sleeping well,” I answered, turning to face him. “Dr. Laurent’s medication worked wonders.”

Alessandro looked down at Emma, a gentle light softening his dark eyes. “She is a special child, Elena. You’ve raised her well under impossible circumstances.”

“I’ve tried,” I murmured, lowering my gaze. “After Daniel died... I felt like the world was completely cold. I came to work here because I needed a safe place for her to grow up.”

“And it will remain safe,” Alessandro promised, stepping right in front of me. “I know what people say about me, Elena. They call me a ruthless criminal. They say the Moretti family built its wealth on blood.”

He reached out, his long fingers gently lifting my chin so I had to look at him.

“But my father taught me one rule above all others,” Alessandro said softly. “We protect those who depend on us. We never build our wealth on the suffering of the innocent. What Julian Vance did to your husband... what he tried to do tonight... goes against everything I stand for.”

My heart hammered against my ribs, not from fear, but from the sudden, overwhelming intensity of his presence.

“Be careful tonight, Alessandro,” I whispered without thinking, calling him by his name for the second time.

A small, genuine smile touched his lips.

“I am always careful, Elena,” he murmured. “Lock this door behind me. Marco and six men will be outside. No one gets through.”

He turned and walked toward the door, stopping just before he opened it.

“When I return tomorrow morning,” Alessandro said, looking back over his shoulder, “this city will be different. And you and Emma will never have to hide behind marble columns again.”
