Chapter 2 - The Search of the East Wing

The heavy oak doors of the grand ballroom swung shut with a boom that rattled the leaded glass panels above them.
Four of Alessandro’s senior security men—men who wore dark Italian suits over heavy shoulder holsters—stepped into position at every exit. The music had died completely, leaving only the sound of heavy rain hammering against the high windows and the sharp, shallow breathing of three hundred high-society guests stuck in a trap of their own making.
Vanessa’s face lost every drop of color.
“Alessandro, you cannot be serious,” she hissed, her pristine facade cracking like dry porcelain. “You are locking up senators, federal judges, and my family because a servant’s child made a noise?”
Alessandro didn't look at the senators. He didn't look at the judges.
He looked at Marco, his head of security.
“Take four men,” Alessandro ordered smoothly, his voice terrifying in its composure. “Go to Miss Cole’s private suite in the east wing. Search the master wardrobe. Look at the bottom of the right-hand shoe rack, behind the silk garment bags.”
“Alessandro!” Vanessa cried, lunging forward to grab his arm. “This is an outrage! You are degrading me!”
He didn't shake her hand off. He simply turned his dark, piercing eyes toward her until her fingers loosened of their own accord.
“If there is nothing there, Vanessa,” Alessandro said softly, “I will personally apologize to you on my knees before every person in this room, and I will double your family’s investment share in the harbor development project.”
He paused, a dark glint flashing in his gaze.
“But if the box is there... you and I will have a very different conversation.”
Marco bowed his head once and signaled to three guards. They moved swiftly, their polished leather shoes clicking against the marble as they disappeared up the grand winding staircase toward the private living quarters.
The ballroom was suffocating.
Guests stood glued to their spots, afraid that moving or whispering too loudly would draw the dark attention of the Moretti capo.
I held Emma tightly against my hip, feeling her warm little forehead against my neck. She was trembling slightly, confused by the heavy atmosphere, but she kept her small thumb tucked into her mouth, watching Alessandro with wide, curious eyes.
Five minutes passed. They felt like five decades.
Then, the rhythmic sound of heavy footsteps descended the marble staircase.
Marco returned.
In his hands, he carried a large, decorative cardboard box printed with a vintage pink floral pattern.
A collective gasp rippled through the three hundred guests.
Marco stopped two paces from Alessandro, holding out the box. The lid had been removed. Inside, nestled in white tissue paper, lay a soft, flesh-colored silicone maternity belly designed to simulate a six-month pregnancy. Beneath it sat a folded white paper receipt from a medical supply boutique in Manhattan.
Vanessa backed away slowly, her eyes wide with terror, her heels clicking frantically against the marble floor.
“It... it’s a plant!” she gasped, her voice shrill and desperate. “She put it there! The maid put it there to set me up!”
Alessandro reached into the box, picked up the folded receipt, and unfolded it with slow, deliberate precision.
He read it silently.
“Purchased seven weeks ago,” Alessandro read aloud, his deep voice carrying into every silent corner of the vast room. “Paid in cash. Signed under the name Vanessa Cole.”
He looked up from the paper, his face completely devoid of warmth.
“You lied to me,” Alessandro said.
“Alessandro, listen to me!” Vanessa cried, tears running down her cheeks now, smearing her expensive mascara. “I did it for us! I knew you wanted a family! I knew your council was pushing you to produce an heir before the harbor vote! I was going to get pregnant this month, I swear it! I just needed to secure the betrothal first!”
“You didn't just lie about a child, Vanessa,” Alessandro said, taking a slow step toward her. “You brought three hundred witnesses into my house to trap me into a marriage built on a fraud.”
He turned to Marco.
“Escort Miss Cole and her parents off the property,” Alessandro commanded coldly. “Cancel all contracts with Cole Enterprises. Terminate their access to the northern shipping lines immediately.”
Vanessa’s father, a wealthy port developer, stepped forward, his face red with anger. “Moretti, you can’t ruin us over a domestic mistake!”
Marco stepped between the old man and Alessandro, placing a heavy hand on the developer’s chest. “Walk out on your own feet, Signor Cole, or my men will throw you into the rain.”
The Cole family was escorted out through the side doors under the shocked, whispering gazes of the city's elite.
Alessandro stood alone under the central chandelier for a long moment, staring at the empty floral box in Marco’s hands.

Then, he turned around.
His eyes found me standing by the marble column, holding my shivering daughter.
