Chapter 4 - Shadows of the Waterfront

The name echoed in the quiet library like a gunshot.
Alessandro’s head snapped toward Marco. “Julian Vance? The union boss?”
“Yes,” Marco replied, opening the folder and handing a sheet of financial printouts to Alessandro. “The Cole family was facing bankruptcy after their northern shipping contract failed. Vancebailed them out on one condition: that Vanessa marry you before the end of the quarter.”
Alessandro’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits as he scanned the paper. “Why would Vance care if I married Vanessa?”
“Because,” Marco explained, his voice low, “the marriage contract included a clause merging the Moretti estate’s private docks with the Cole family's public port access. If you married her, Julian Vance would have gained full administrative access to your private shipping manifests.”
I sat frozen on the sofa, clutching the cashmere blanket to my chest.
My mind raced back three years ago—to the cold rain falling on Daniel’s funeral, to the men in dark suits who told me to drop my questions about the rusted scaffolding that had collapsed on the pier.
Daniel hadn't died in a simple accident.
He had been working on Dock 9—the exact dock Julian Vance was trying to seize through the Cole family marriage.
“Mr. Moretti,” I spoke up, my voice trembling with a mixture of fear and sudden realization.
Alessandro turned to me immediately. “What is it, Elena?”
“Three years ago... before my husband died,” I whispered, tears welling up in my eyes. “Daniel told me he found illegal modifications being made to the storage vaults under Dock 9. He said someone was reinforcing the underground chambers to store heavy, unmarked cargo. When he threatened to report it to the city inspector... he died two days later.”
Alessandro walked over to the sofa, kneeling beside me once more, his face dark with fury.
“Daniel was murdered because he found Vance’s smuggling vault,” Alessandro said, putting the pieces together. “And Vance tried to use Vanessa Cole to buy his way into my estate so he could control that vault permanently.”
“It was never just a fake pregnancy,” I realized, cold dread washing over me. “It was a Trojan horse.”
Alessandro reached out, placing a firm, reassuring hand over mine. His grip was warm, solid, and absolute.
“Your husband was an honest man, Elena,” Alessandro said softly, looking directly into my eyes. “And Vance killed him to cover his greed. But Vance made a fatal error when he brought his games into my house.”

He stood up, turning to Marco with lethal authority.
“Assemble the capos,” Alessandro commanded. “Lock down Dock 9 tonight. I want every crate, every warehouse, and every record audited before sunrise. If Julian Vance wants a war over that port... I will give him one he won't survive.”
