Chapter 18 - THE RESTORATION

Two months later, the Prescott name was officially dead.

The final corporate decree had been signed by the Delaware Chancery Court. Every asset, every subsidiary, every intellectual patent once held by Prescott Global was now fully absorbed into Vanguard Enterprises.

I hosted the victory summit not in an opulent ballroom, but at the historic Ward estate in the hills of the Berkshires—the home my grandfather had built with his bare hands before Arthur Prescott’s family had ever arrived to bleed it dry.

The estate’s grand dining hall was filled with the people who had stood by me: Nathan, who had been promoted to Chief Financial Officer with a five percent equity stake that made him a billionaire in his own right; the trusted ship captains who had refused to yield to the Boreas blockade; and Julian Vance, who sat at the right hand of the head of the table.

As the evening wore on and laughter echoed through the vaulted hall, Nathan stood up, his crystal glass held high.

"To the woman who looked at ruin and saw an opportunity to conquer," Nathan proclaimed, looking down the table at me with profound respect. "To Chairwoman Elena Ward!"

The room rose to its feet, fifty powerful men and women raising their glasses in unanimous acclaim.

"To Elena!"

I smiled, raising my glass in acknowledgment, feeling the warmth of true loyalty wash over the scars of the past.

Later that night, after the guests had departed for the guest lodges and the great house settled into peaceful stillness, I sat alone in my grandfather’s private study. The fire in the stone hearth crackled softly, casting dancing shadows over the wall of first-edition naval histories and antique brass compasses.

Julian walked in quietly, carrying two snifters of aged cognac. He set one before me and took the leather wingback chair opposite mine.

"You look peaceful," Julian observed, studying my face in the firelight.

"I am," I whispered. "For the first time since Arthur walked into my life, I don't feel like I’m defending a fortress. I feel like I'm finally living in it."

Julian smiled, taking a sip of his drink. "Vanguard’s stock closed at a historic high today. The international press is calling you the most formidable maritime magnate of the century. Arthur Prescott is sitting in a cell in Florence, Colorado, cleaning shower stalls. You won, Elena. Absolutely and completely."

"We won, Julian," I corrected him gently, meeting his warm gray eyes. "I couldn't have done it without you."

Julian leaned forward, his expression softening with an emotion he had kept carefully guarded beneath his corporate armor for months. He reached across the small table between us, his fingers lightly brushing against mine.

"Then let's build the next chapter together," he murmured. "Not just as partners on a balance sheet. But as something real."

A profound sense of warmth and belonging settled over my heart. I didn't pull my hand away. I let my fingers intertwine with his, feeling the steady, reassuring pulse of a man who respected my power rather than fearing it.

May you like

"Together," I agreed softly.
