Chapter 15 - THE MASQUERADE OF HYPOCRITES

Geneva in the winter was a landscape of pristine white snow and razor-sharp slate roofs. The private estate of Marcus Graves sat nestled along the banks of Lake Geneva, guarded by twelve-foot wrought-iron gates and private security carrying submachine guns under tailored overcoats.
Tonight, however, the fortress was open to the elite.
It was the annual Winter Solstice Gala for the Global Maritime Federation—an exclusive gathering where shipping barons, central bankers, and politicians traded the sovereignty of nations over glasses of champagne worth more than a working-class annual salary.
I had not been invited.
Yet, as the heavy brass doors of the ballroom parted, the murmurs of five hundred dignitaries died in their throats.
I walked down the grand marble staircase dressed in a floor-length gown of liquid obsidian silk, the back open to reveal the poised, unbroken line of my spine. Around my neck hung the *Eye of the Vanguard*—a flawless seventy-carat sapphire necklace that my grandfather had commissioned when he launched his first merchant vessel fifty years ago.
Flanking me on either side were Julian Vance, towering and lethal in a custom tuxedo, and Nathan, carrying a slim leather case that contained enough financial dynamite to level a sovereign bank.
At the far end of the ballroom, standing beneath a massive crystal chandelier, was Marcus Graves.
He was in his late seventies, with silver hair brushed back from a face carved from granite. His eyes were cold, calculating, and ancient. Beside him stood a woman whose face made my stomach twist into a knot of ice: Chloe Davis, Arthur Prescott’s former executive assistant and mistress.
She was draped in emeralds, her wrist wrapped in a diamond bracelet that I recognized instantly. It was an heirloom from the Prescott family collection—one Arthur had claimed was lost in a bank audit.
"Elena Ward," Marcus Graves’s voice rumbled across the silence, cultured and chillingly polite. He raised his champagne glass in a mock toast. "I must commend your audacity. Few trespassers have the courage to walk into my dining room after having their fleet paralyzed."
I descended the final step, the silk of my dress whispering against the polished floor.
"I don't trespass in houses built with stolen money, Marcus," I replied, my voice carrying cleanly to every corner of the frozen room. "I merely inspect the collateral before I foreclose."
Chloe Davis sneered, stepping forward with an arrogant smirk that mirrored Arthur’s old foolishness. "You’re finished, Elena. Boreas Marine owns your Pacific corridor. Arthur took the fall, but Marcus is going to wipe your grandfather's name off every ocean on this planet."
I didn't even look at her. I kept my eyes locked entirely on Graves.
"You hired Arthur to marry me," I stated plainly. "You funded his extravagant lifestyle, fed his delusions of grandeur, and taught him how to siphon Vanguard’s intellectual property into your offshore accounts. You thought if Arthur controlled me, you would finally own the empire my grandfather denied you."
Graves took a slow sip of his champagne, unimpressed. "Your grandfather was a sentimental fool who believed in ethics and honor. The modern world is governed by capital and power. I have both. You have twelve ships rusting in San Pedro harbor and an appeal that will strip your board of its authority by Monday morning."
"Is that what your lawyers told you?" I asked quietly.
I extended my hand without looking. Nathan stepped forward and placed a single sheet of paper into my fingers.
"What is that?" Graves muttered, a flicker of irritation disturbing his aristocratic calm.
"This," I said, holding it up, "is an executive warrant issued three hours ago by the Swiss Federal Banking Commission. It authorizes the immediate, worldwide seizure of all assets associated with Apex Sovereign Holdings and Cygnus Maritime."
The color drained from Graves’s face with astonishing speed. "That's impossible. Those accounts are protected under Swiss secrecy covenants."

"They were," Julian Vance spoke up, stepping forward with a cold, predatory smile. "Until we provided the Commission with the biometric login records of your trusted operative here, Miss Chloe Davis. It turns out she was funneling Prescott Global’s illicit wire transfers directly into your private Swiss holding company. That isn't corporate competition, Marcus. That is felony money laundering under international jurisdiction."
