Chapter 17 - THE PURGE OF THE HARBOR

By the time our private jet touched down at Los Angeles International Airport the following dawn, the shockwaves of Marcus Graves’s arrest had pulverized the opposition.
The administrative freeze on Vanguard’s fleet was dissolved by an emergency federal court order at 4:00 AM.
I stood once more on the bridge of the *Vanguard Sovereign*, the morning sun blazing over the Pacific Ocean like liquid gold. The deck beneath my boots hummed with the immense, thrumming power of two massive engines firing up.
Nathan was on his radio with the harbor control. "Clearance confirmed. Berths twelve through forty are open. The Boreas tankers have been seized by the U.S. Marshals for non-payment of port dues."
Julian walked up beside me, handing me a freshly poured porcelain cup of tea. He looked tired, but his eyes carried the quiet, dangerous satisfaction of a general who had routed an invading army.
"The Pacific corridor is ours," Julian said, watching the massive hydraulic cranes lift the final Vanguard containers into place. "Seattle, Long Beach, Busan, Singapore. We have secured unbroken maritime dominion from North America to the South China Sea."
I watched the horizon, where the endless sea met the sky.
"What about Arthur?" I asked quietly.
"His appeal was thrown out thirty minutes ago," Nathan reported from behind us, shutting his laptop. "Sterling & Croft withdrew their representation the second Graves’s Swiss funds were frozen. Arthur’s sentencing hearing is scheduled for next Tuesday. The prosecution is asking for thirty-five years without possibility of parole."
Thirty-five years. Arthur would spend the rest of his natural life behind concrete walls, eating slop off plastic trays, knowing that every breath of fresh air, every dollar of wealth, and every ounce of influence he had tried to steal from me now belonged exclusively to my domain.
"And Chloe?"
"She sang like a canary to the federal prosecutors," Nathan added with a cold smirk. "She confessed to everything: the leaked memos, the offshore routing, the corporate espionage. She’s looking at fifteen years. The diamond bracelet has already been returned to your personal vault."
I closed my eyes and took a deep, clean breath of the salt air.
For the first time in four years, the crushing weight of betrayal that had lived in my chest felt completely dissolved. The husband who had mocked me, the mistress who had flaunted her victory, the hidden puppet master who had sought to destroy my family—all of them were broken, scattered like chaff before an unforgiving wind.
"Elena," Julian said, his voice lowering, shifting from business partner to something far more intimate.
I opened my eyes and looked at him.
"You built something untouchable," he said, holding my gaze with an intensity that made the surrounding hum of the ship fade away. "What happens now?"
May you like
"Now," I replied, a genuine, luminous smile finally gracing my face, "we sail."
