Chapter 16 - THE TREASON WITHIN

Chloe shrieked, dropping her champagne flute onto the marble floor, where it shattered into a hundred sparkling shards.

"Marcus, what are they talking about?!" she cried, clutching his arm in blind panic. "You promised me immunity! You promised that if I gave you the Seattle tender numbers, I’d be safe in Zurich!"

The entire ballroom erupted into gasps. Ambassadors and shipping tycoons backed away from Graves as if he were carrying a lethal plague.

Graves violently shook Chloe off, his face twisting into a mask of pure, demonic fury. "Shut your mouth, you stupid little whore!"

"The tender," I repeated, my voice dropping like a guillotine blade. "Thank you for confirming that on record, Chloe. The Swiss Federal Police are already waiting in the foyer."

Graves lunged forward, his composed mask shattered beyond repair. "You think you can destroy me with a few seized accounts?! I have lines of credit in London, Tokyo, and Frankfurt! I will buy your shipping lines and dismantle your ships for scrap before you ever set foot in the Pacific!"

"You don't have lines of credit anywhere, Marcus," Nathan interjected, holding up his tablet for Graves to see. "The moment the Swiss authorities flagged your accounts, Vanguard’s algorithmic liquidity system automatically called in every syndicated loan your subsidiaries held with the Vance Group. You are over-leveraged by four billion dollars. As of forty seconds ago, your banks declared an event of default."

Graves stared at the screen. His hands began to shake violently, the vein in his temple throbbing against his pale skin.

"No... no, that's impossible. Who authorized the Vance Group to call the loans?"

Julian stepped into his line of sight, towering over the old man with merciless dominance.

"She did," Julian said softly. "Elena doesn't just own Vanguard, Marcus. Two months ago, she acquired forty-nine percent of Vance Capital. You weren't fighting two separate empires. You were fighting one woman who owns the entire board."

Two Swiss federal agents in dark suits entered the room, accompanied by local police officers. The chief investigator walked directly to Graves, holding up an international arrest warrant bearing the red seal of Interpol.

"Marcus Graves," the officer announced in precise French, then in English. "You are under arrest for conspiracy, international money laundering, and economic sabotage. Miss Davis, you are also under arrest as a material co-conspirator."

Chloe broke down into hysterical sobs as the handcuffs were snapped around her delicate wrists, the diamond bracelet Arthur had stolen from me clicking against the cold iron.

Graves didn't weep. He stood frozen, his eyes burning into mine with an ocean of pure, unadulterated venom.

"Your grandfather died thinking he was pure," Graves spat as the officers seized his arms. "You’re just like him, Elena! But this world doesn't belong to the pure! Someone will finish what I started!"

May you like

"They can try," I said, stepping closer until I was only inches from his face. "And when they come, they will find that I am not my grandfather. He forgave your treason and let you walk away with your life. I took your money, your freedom, and your legacy. Now get out of my sight."
