Chapter 7 - Recovery and Revelation

Back in the second-floor guest suite, Harper Vance stood before the tall mirror, examining the faint golden shadow remaining near her left cheekbone with a small cosmetic sponge.
The physical scars were healing, but the internal transformation was profound. For three years, she had viewed herself as an invisible instrument—a cog in the massive, terrifying machine of Dante Moretti’s empire. The attack in the alley had forced her to confront her own mortality, but survival had stripped away her fear, replacing it with an unbreakable resilience.
A soft knock echoed at the door, and Dante stepped inside, holding a small velvet jeweler’s box.
“You’re moving around too fast,” Dante observed gently, walking over to stand behind her, his reflection towering over hers in the mirror.
“I’ve spent three weeks staring at four walls and reviewing spreadsheets, Dante,” Harper said, turning around with a slight smile. “If I don't get back to my desk tomorrow, I’m going to start alphabetizing your sock drawer out of sheer boredom.”
Dante chuckled softly—a rare sound that warmed his stern features. He opened the velvet box, revealing a delicate, custom-designed platinum pendant shaped like an anchor, inlaid with three small diamonds representing the years she had stood by his side.
“What is this?” she asked softly.
“Insurance,” Dante said, stepping closer and lifting the necklace from the box. He gently turned her around, brushing her dark hair over her shoulder, and fastened the chain around her neck. “A reminder that no matter where my business takes me, you are anchored to something permanent in this house.”
Harper touched the cool platinum pendant resting against her collarbone, feeling a rush of warmth spread through her chest. “You’re getting dangerously sentimental, Mr. Moretti.”
“Only for you,” Dante murmured, resting his hands lightly on her shoulders. Then, his tone shifted back into quiet seriousness. “Nikolai Petrov signed over his entire remaining portfolio this morning. His syndicate in Gary is dismantled. Your apartment in Lincoln Park has been completely renovated, retrofitted with biometric locks, and secured by my detail. But... I don't want you moving back there.”
Harper turned to face him, raising an eyebrow. “Oh? And where do you propose I live?”
“Right here,” Dante said without a fraction of hesitation. “With me. As my partner, in every sense of the word.”

Harper looked into his dark, intense eyes, seeing not the feared mafia boss of Chicago, but a man who had chosen to share his world with her. She smiled, stepping closer to wrap her arms around his neck.
“It’s about time you asked,” she whispered.
