Chapter 3 - The Fortress of Moretti

By noon, Harper had been discharged against her better judgment, her resistance battered down by a combination of Dante’s unyielding insistence and a private medical team that had materialized in Room 412 with portable diagnostic equipment and an escort of two armed men in tailored black suits.

Instead of returning to her modest apartment in Lincoln Park—which Dante had deemed compromised the moment the threat was registered—she found herself being driven in the armored backseat of a matte-black Maybach straight to the Moretti estate: a heavily fortified limestone mansion nestled behind iron gates in the exclusive Gold Coast neighborhood.

The estate was a fortress disguised as a historic European manor. Armed private security guards patrolled the perimeter, security cameras monitored every square inch of the manicured grounds, and the heavy oak front doors opened into a grand foyer lined with centuries-old art and priceless antiques.

Yet, for all its luxury, the atmosphere inside the mansion was tense, humming with the restrained energy of an army preparing for battle.

Dante led Harper upstairs to a sprawling, sunlit guest suite on the second floor, where a private nurse was already waiting with medical supplies, pain management medication, and a fresh change of comfortable clothing.

“Rest,” Dante instructed, standing in the doorway of the suite as Harper sat gingerly on the edge of the king-sized velvet bed. “You have a detail stationed outside your door twenty-four hours a day. Nobody enters this wing without my direct authorization.”

“Dante,” Harper called out as he turned to leave, her voice halting him in the doorway. He paused, looking back over his broad shoulder. “Where are you going?”

“To pay a visit to an old friend,” Dante said coldly.

“Be careful,” she whispered, the words slipping out before she could censor them. “They’re baiting you. This whole attack was designed to make you angry—to make you make a mistake.”

Dante’s dark eyes softened for a fraction of a second, a fleeting human expression breaking through the armor of the syndicate boss.

“Harper,” he said softly, “they made their mistake the moment they laid a hand on you.”

With that, he turned and disappeared down the grand hallway, the heavy double doors clicking shut behind him.

Downstairs in the subterranean tactical command center of the mansion, Marcus Cole—Dante’s long-standing chief of security and ruthless enforcer—was already waiting alongside three tactical squad leaders. Holographic tactical maps of the Chicago industrial corridor glowed blue across the central mahogany conference table, highlighting three abandoned warehouses near the Calumet River.

“We traced the burner phone used to coordinate the hit squad,” Marcus reported instantly as Dante stepped into the room, shucking off his suit jacket and rolling up his white shirt sleeves to reveal powerful, corded forearms. “Signal bounced through three proxy servers in downtown Gary, but our digital forensics team isolated the terminal packet. It originated from an old shipping pier controlled by Petrov’s front company, North Star Logistics.”

Dante leaned over the holographic map, his dark eyes tracking the river coordinates. “How many men are stationed there?”

“Based on thermal drone sweeps we ran twenty minutes ago, approximately twenty to twenty-five armed combatants,” Marcus said, tossing a tactical dossier onto the table. “Heavy artillery, imported Czech submachine guns, and reinforced perimeter defenses. They’re expecting us, boss. They want a siege.”

“Then we won’t disappoint them,” Dante said coldly, straightening up. “Assemble the strike teams. We move in forty-five minutes. I want every exit sealed, every escape route cut off, and I want Nikolai Petrov brought to me alive.”

Marcus nodded grimly, a lethal grin spreading across his weathered face. “Consider it done.”
