Chapter 10 - Dawn Over Chicago

The private airstrip at O’Hare was swept by howling winter winds as Dante’s armored Maybach sped across the tarmac, cutting off the sleek white Gulfstream jet idling on the runway with its turbine engines screaming at full power.

The vehicle doors flew open. Dante stepped out first, his heavy black overcoat billowing in the jet wash, followed immediately by Harper and Marcus.

At the foot of the aircraft's folding metal stairs, Julian Vance—older, impeccably dressed in a camel-hair coat, his silver hair slicked back—froze as he turned around, realizing his escape route had been completely sealed.

He spotted Harper stepping out from behind Dante, and a cold, arrogant smile touched his lips.

“Harper,” Julian called out over the roar of the jet engines. “I must admit, I didn't expect my niece to crawl out from under Moretti’s shadow. I suppose trash always finds a way back to the gutter.”

Dante’s hand dropped instinctively toward the holster beneath his coat, but Harper placed her hand gently over his forearm, stopping him.

She walked forward alone, stopping ten feet away from her uncle, her posture radiating an absolute, unshakeable authority that made Julian’s arrogant smile falter.

“You spent your entire life running from shadows, Uncle Julian,” Harper said, her voice cutting clearly through the howling wind. “You stole from my parents, you partnered with dead men like Petrov, and you thought you could use me as leverage against a man you never had the courage to face yourself.”

“You’re talking to a dead man, girl,” Julian snarled, taking a step forward before two of Moretti’s tactical guards leveled their weapons from the shadows of the tarmac.

“No,” Harper replied coldly. “You’re talking to the person who just audited every offshore account, shell company, and fraudulent deed you own. The federal indictments were signed twenty minutes ago. When the cabin door of that jet opens, federal marshals will be waiting for you in Geneva, just like they’re waiting for you here.”

Julian’s face drained of color as the reality of his total destruction settled over him. He looked past Harper to Dante Moretti standing tall in the snow, his dark eyes fixed on him with the weight of an executioner.

Without a word, federal security vehicles with flashing blue lights swarmed out from behind the hangars, cutting off the jet from all sides.

Dante walked up beside Harper, sliding his arm around her waist and pulling her close against his side.

As federal agents swarmed the airstrip and placed Julian Vance in handcuffs, the first rays of a brilliant winter sunrise broke through the heavy gray clouds over Lake Michigan, painting the towering Chicago skyline in shades of gold and amber.

The storm had passed. The shadows had cleared.

Dante looked down at Harper, his dark eyes softening into something permanent and deep.

“Come home, Harper,” he whispered against her hair.

Harper smiled, leaning her head against his shoulder as the helicopter blades began to spin, lifting them back toward the city they had conquered together.
