Chapter 5 - The Secret in the River

By 8:00 p.m., the Moretti estate was locked down tighter than a federal bunker.

Upstairs in the second-floor guest suite, Harper sat propped up against a mountain of plush pillows, a cup of steaming chamomile tea resting between her trembling hands. Her left eye was still swollen and bruised, but the medical team had managed to manage the pain with intravenous anti-inflammatories, allowing her to sit up and review digital security logs on a secure tablet Dante had provided.

The heavy double doors swung open softly, and Dante stepped into the room.

He had changed out of his blood-stained shirt into a clean charcoal sweater and dark trousers, but the dark circles under his eyes and the grim set of his jaw revealed the immense toll the day had taken on him.

He walked over to the bed, placing a small, damp, muddy leather handbag on the bedside table.

Harper stared at the ruined purse—her favorite designer bag, now stained with river silt, its clasp broken and fabric soaked through.

“Marcus’s dive team found it snagged on an industrial piling three miles downriver from the North Star facility,” Dante explained quietly, pulling up a chair and sitting down beside her.

Harper swallowed hard, her fingers tightening around the warm ceramic mug. “Did they... did they get what was on it?”

Dante leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, his dark eyes searching her face with an intensity that made her breath catch.

“Petrov confessed before I put him away,” Dante said softly. “He told me about the master backup drive. He told me why they targeted you specifically—not just to send a message, but to steal the administrative override keys to my shipping grid.”

Harper looked down into her tea, a wave of guilt washing over her bruised features. “I’m sorry, Dante. I should have told you at the hospital. I realized when I woke up that my bag was missing, but I didn't want to panic you while you were already dealing with the hit squad.”

“Harper, look at me,” Dante commanded gently, reaching out to place his large, warm hand over her cold fingers.

She lifted her gaze, meeting his dark, unblinking stare.

“You were ambushed, beaten, and left for dead in an alley,” Dante said, his voice vibrating with a fierce, protective emotion. “You fought three trained thugs bare-handed to protect my corporate data, and you never once compromised your loyalty. You have nothing to apologize for.”

“They could have killed me,” she whispered, a single tear escaping her good eye and tracing a path down her bruised cheek.

Dante’s thumb moved upward, gently wiping away the tear with a tenderness that completely dismantled the armor of the feared Chicago crime lord.

“I know,” he murmured, his voice cracking slightly. “And that is a reality I am going to ensure never, ever happens again.”

He reached into the mud-stained pocket of the ruined handbag resting on the table and pulled out a small, metallic silver USB drive—scratched and covered in silt, but structurally intact.

“The data is safe,” Dante said quietly, placing the drive on the table beside her tea. “Our IT team ran a diagnostic an hour ago. The military-grade encryption held. Petrov and his men didn't get a single byte of classified information.”

Harper let out a long, shuddering breath, the tension finally draining from her fractured ribs. “Thank God.”

“No,” Dante corrected softly, leaning in closer until his forehead was only inches from hers, his dark eyes locked onto her lips. “Thank you.”

The silence that settled over the bedroom was no longer heavy or terrifying; it was warm, charged with an unspoken electricity that had been building between them across three years of late-night boardrooms, whispered secrets, and shared survival.

Dante didn’t pull away. Instead, his hand slid slowly from her fingers up her arm, resting gently against the side of her neck, careful to avoid her cervical collar.

“For three years, I believed that keeping everyone at arm’s length—maintaining absolute control, absolute silence—was the only way to survive in this city,” Dante whispered, his voice a low, hypnotic register that made Harper’s heart race against her cracked ribs. “I was wrong.”

“Dante...” she breathed, her voice trembling.

“You walked into my life with a stack of scheduling folders and a refusal to be intimidated by my reputation,” he continued, his gaze dropping to her lips before returning to her eyes. “And somewhere along the way, you became the only anchor keeping me tethered to anything real.”

Before Harper could find her voice to respond, Dante leaned forward and pressed his lips softly against hers.

It was a gentle, protective kiss—devoid of the violence and chaos of the syndicate war outside, yet burning with an intensity that made the rest of the world vanish into absolute nothingness. Harper’s eyes fluttered shut, her hand rising weakly to rest against the chest of his sweater, feeling the rapid, heavy thud of his heart matching her own.

When Dante finally pulled back, resting his forehead against hers in the dim light of the bedroom, a rare, genuine smile touched his lips.

“The war with Petrov is over,” Dante whispered against her skin. “And starting tomorrow, the rules in this house are going to change.”
