Chapter 9 - THE GROUNDBREAKING

Six months later.

The grand opening of the St. Jude Waterfront Park and Promenade was the largest public event the city had seen in a decade.

Thousands of citizens gathered along the harbor seawall. Families walked along the broad stone pathways, children played near the fountains, and local business owners occupied the sleek retail spaces designed by Kuri Studios.

A massive wooden stage had been erected near the water, decorated with white flowers and Lebanese cedar motifs—a subtle homage to Sarah’s grandmother.

Sarah stood at the side of the stage, wearing a stunning cream-colored dress suit, holding a golden ribbon-cutting shovel. Beside her stood the Mayor, city council members, and civic leaders.

And standing right behind her, watching her with deep devotion, was Enzo Valente.

The Mayor stepped up to the podium, his voice booming over the loudspeakers.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” the Mayor announced, gesturing toward the gleaming promenade. “One year ago, this waterfront was an abandoned industrial wasteland, mired in corporate corruption and greed. Today, thanks to the vision, courage, and brilliant design of one extraordinary woman, it is the crown jewel of our city!”

The crowd erupted into thunderous applause, cheering and waving small flags.

“Please welcome,” the Mayor shouted over the applause, “our chief architect, Sarah Kuri!”

Sarah stepped up to the podium. As she looked out over the massive crowd, her eyes caught a small group of senior citizens sitting in the front row—her grandmother’s friends from the Lebanese community center, smiling and wiping tears of pride from their eyes.

Sarah smiled into the microphone.

“When I first began designing this park,” Sarah spoke, her voice carrying cleanly across the open harbor air, “a powerful man told me that consequences belonged to people with smaller names. He told me that money and status gave people the right to push others around.”

She looked toward Enzo, whose eyes were shining with intense love.

“He was wrong,” Sarah continued, her voice ringing with deep conviction. “True power isn’t built on fear, or arrogance, or stolen wealth. True power is built on integrity, on respect, and on the strength of the people who stand beside you when the storm comes. This park belongs to the people of this city. May it stand forever.”

The crowd went wild, standing up to give her a roaring standing ovation.

Sarah stepped back from the podium, her heart overflowing with joy. Enzo stepped forward, wrapping his arms around her and lifting her slightly into the air, spinning her around as the crowd cheered even louder.

“I am so proud of you, mia cara,” Enzo whispered into her ear as he set her down.

“We built this together,” Sarah replied softly, holding his face in her hands.
