Chapter 7 - SHADOWS OF THE PAST

Three months later.

The morning sun blazed brightly over the harbor, reflecting off the fresh concrete and steel girders of the St. Jude Waterfront site.

The sound of heavy machinery, cranes, and construction workers filled the air—a symphony of progress. At the center of the site, standing on an elevated observation platform, Sarah was reviewing blueprints with her lead site engineer. She wore a white hard hat over her braided hair, a dark blue work jacket, and steel-toed boots, looking completely in her element.

Kuri Studios had expanded exponentially. They were now the official lead architectural firm for the entire two-billion-dollar waterfront development.

A sleek black SUV pulled up to the edge of the construction perimeter. Enzo stepped out, wearing a sharp grey suit, looking up at the rising framework with a proud expression. He walked up the wooden ramp to the observation deck, nodding politely to the workers who respectfully made way for him.

“How’s my favorite architect?” Enzo asked, stepping up behind Sarah and wrapping his arms around her waist, pulling her back against his chest.

Sarah leaned back into his warm embrace, smiling as he kissed the side of her neck. “Busy. The foundation pour for the west promenade is two days ahead of schedule.”

“I know,” Enzo chuckled softly. “Your site manager called me this morning to complain that you’re working twenty-hour days again.”

“Someone has to make sure the concrete cures properly,” Sarah teased, turning in his arms to fix his tie. “What are you doing here? Don't you have a board meeting with the port authority?”

“I rescheduled,” Enzo said, his expression turning slightly more serious. “I wanted to tell you in person. The final bankruptcy proceedings for Castellano Enterprises were completed an hour ago.”

Sarah paused, looking at him. “And?”

“The family assets have been completely liquidated,” Enzo said. “Victor Castellano has retired to a small house in Florida, completely broke. And Dominic...” Enzo hesitated slightly. “Dominic’s legal team accepted a plea deal this morning. He begins a five-year prison sentence next week for corporate espionage and fraud.”

Sarah took a deep breath, letting out a quiet sigh. There was no joy in hearing about another human being’s downfall, but a profound sense of closure settled over her heart. The toxic shadow that had hung over her career for so long was finally, completely erased.

“It’s really over,” Sarah whispered.

“It’s just beginning,” Enzo corrected softly, taking her hand and kissing her knuckles. “Now that the past is cleared away, we can finally focus on the future.”

Just then, Enzo’s phone chimed in his pocket. He pulled it out, glanced at the screen, and frowned slightly.

Sarah noticed the subtle shift in his eyes immediately. “What is it?”

“It’s a message from my family’s old council in Rome,” Enzo said carefully. “My uncle, Don Mateo Valente. He’s flying into the city tonight.”

Sarah felt a slight chill. She knew that while Enzo had modernized the business, the old Valente family roots in Italy were deep, traditional, and notoriously suspicious of outsiders.

“Why is he coming?” Sarah asked.

Enzo met her gaze, his expression unreadable. “He says he wants to meet the woman who made Enzo Valente pull two billion dollars out of the market overnight.”
