Chapter 6 - AFTER THE STORM

The penthouse terrace of the Valente Tower overlooked the entire city harbor.

It was eight o'clock in the evening. Below, the city lights twinkled like fallen stars, reflecting off the dark, tranquil waters of the bay where the future waterfront project would soon rise.

Sarah stood at the glass railing, holding a glass of sparkling water, feeling the cool night breeze ruffle the stray strands of her dark hair. The day had been a chaotic blur of press conferences, legal filings, and congratulations from city officials who had previously ignored her phone calls.

The glass doors behind her slid open softly.

Enzo walked out onto the terrace, wearing a comfortable black cashmere sweater and dark trousers. He carried a bottle of sparkling water and joined her at the railing, looking out over the city skyline.

“You were incredible today,” Enzo said quietly.

Sarah smiled, looking sideways at him. “I had good co-counsel. Though I’m pretty sure calling an emergency debt audit during a city council session violates at least three rules of standard courtroom etiquette.”

Enzo let out a soft laugh. “Standard rules are designed to protect men like Victor Castellano. Sometimes you have to change the rules of the game while they’re playing it.”

They stood in comfortable silence for a long moment, watching a cargo ship glide slowly out toward the open sea.

“What happens to the Castellanos now?” Sarah asked softly.

“Victor is liquidating his personal assets to pay off the bank syndicate,” Enzo explained, his voice turning serious. “Dominic is facing formal criminal charges for corporate fraud and bribery. He won't be bothering you, or anyone else in this city, for a very long time.”

Sarah took a slow breath, letting the reality set in. The threat was gone. Her firm was safe. Her reputation was intact, elevated to a level she had never imagined possible.

“Why did you do all of this, Enzo?” Sarah asked, turning her body to face him fully. “You didn't just protect my contract. You risked millions of dollars of your own capital to crush them in a single afternoon. Was it really just about the wine?”

Enzo set his glass down on the marble ledge. He stepped closer to her, closing the distance between them until she could feel the heat radiating from his body.

“When Dominic poured that wine on me,” Enzo whispered, his silver eyes dark with deep emotion, “I didn't care about the suit. I didn't care about the insult. But when I saw him turn around and point his finger at you... when I saw him try to blame you for his own smallness... something inside me snapped.”

He reached out, his hand gently cupping the side of her face. His thumb brushed softly across her cheekbone, sending a delicious shiver straight down Sarah’s spine.

“I have spent my whole life surrounded by people who want something from me,” Enzo continued softly, his voice thick with raw honesty. “Power, money, protection. But when you looked at me in that ballroom, Sarah... you didn't look at me like a mob boss or an investor. You looked at me like a man. A man who was hurting.”

Sarah leaned into his touch, her eyes fluttering shut for a brief second before opening to meet his intense gaze.

“You are a man, Enzo,” Sarah whispered back, her heart beating frantically against her ribs. “A good man. A man who protects the things that matter.”

Enzo’s eyes softened, slipping down to her lips. “I want to protect you, Sarah. Not just your business. Not just your blueprints. You.”

Without another word, Enzo leaned down and pressed his lips against hers.

The kiss was slow, deep, and breathtakingly tender. Sarah let out a soft sigh, her hands sliding up his broad chest to wrap around his neck, pulling him closer. The taste of him—rich, warm, and entirely intoxicating—washed away every fear, every doubt, and every memory of the chaos they had endured.

When he finally pulled back, resting his forehead against hers, both of them were breathing heavily.

“Stay with me tonight,” Enzo murmured against her lips.

May you like

Sarah looked into his eyes, seeing no shadows, no crime, and no threats—only the deep, unwavering devotion of a man who loved her.

“I’m not going anywhere,” Sarah whispered.
