Chapter 9 - The Warmth of Sunlight

The heavy rain finally broke, parting to let brilliant autumn sunlight flood through the tall marble windows of the Moretti estate. The air inside no longer smelled of wet stone and gasoline, but of lavender sachets and freshly brewed, extra-strong coffee.

In the sunroom overlooking the harbor, Mia sat comfortably in a plush armchair, wrapped in a warm cashmere blanket. Though still pale and recovering from her ordeal, the hollow look in her eyes had been replaced by a quiet, resilient peace. Beside her sat Harper, finally wearing clean clothes, her hair neatly brushed, laughing brightly as she played with a new set of wooden toys.

Dante entered quietly, holding a steaming mug of coffee. He paused at the doorway, watching the mother and daughter interact. For seventeen years, his life had been defined by shadows, bullet casings, and defensive walls built to keep the world at bay. Yet, looking at Harper—who looked up, dropped her toys, and ran straight toward him with a beaming smile—he realized that true strength had never come from armor or fear.

He knelt down without hesitation, catching the little girl as she threw her arms around his neck, burying her face in his shoulder.

“Thank you, Mr. Dante,” Harper whispered softly into his ear.

Dante held her close, feeling the solid, vibrant warmth of a child’s trust. For the first time in his life, the Moretti estate felt less like a fortress and more like a home.
