Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Subterranean Labyrinth

The heavy steel door groaned as Dante forced it open, the screech of long-ungreased hinges cutting through the subterranean silence. A wave of damp air, aged oak, and faint copper rushed out to meet him. Armed with a high-lumens tactical flashlight, Dante descended the spiral stone steps into the absolute blackness of the lower vaults.

This part of the estate had not seen active use in decades. Shelves of rotting vintage wine bottles stretched endlessly into the gloom, casting elongated, skeletal shadows across the damp brick walls. Dante moved with the silent, lethal grace of a predator hunting in its own territory. Every footstep echoed like a gunshot.

He reached the secondary reinforced holding room—a relic of his father’s darker, more paranoid era. The heavy deadbolt had been thrown from the outside, freshly forced into place not long ago. Raising his voice, Dante called out into the dark.

For a long moment, there was only silence. Then, a faint, ragged rasp brushed against his ears, followed by that exact rhythmic pattern Harper had described: a weak, deliberate strike against the inner wooden panel.

Dante lunged forward, throwing his weight against the rusted locking mechanism. With a deafening snap of metal, the door gave way, revealing a harrowing sight that solidified every dark suspicion blooming in his chest.
