Chapter 7 - The Gutter and the Gavel

The asphalt on the outer shoulder of the highway was cold, gritty, and merciless against Derek Halston’s bare feet.

The heavy iron gates of the Great Falls estate stood behind him like the barred perimeter of a fortress that had permanently cast out a parasite. Through the ornate wrought iron, the warm evening amber of the carriage lanterns glowed against the Virginia limestone, illuminating a world that had once bowed to his every whim—a world he now realized he had never truly possessed.

Beside him on the damp grass, Evelyn Halston was a shattered caricature of social grace. Her custom charcoal blazer was streaked with dirt where she had tripped against the curb; her pearl necklace had snapped during her frantic resistance against the female deputy, scattering fifty-thousand dollars’ worth of South Sea pearls into the weeds like discarded teeth.

"Derek..." she choked, her voice rattling with dry, wheezing sobs. "Call Harrison. Call the senator. Call someone from the Congressional Club. They can't do this to us! I am a member of the Daughters of the Commonwealth! You are the CEO of Halston Group! Tell them this is an illegal breach of civil liberties!"

"Mother, shut up!" Derek snarled, spinning around, his face pale and contorted with wild, hunted fury. "Shut up! You don't get it, do you? Harrison works for Vance Sovereign! The senator's entire campaign PAC is underwritten by Vance real estate holdings! Everyone we know... every single hand we shook for six years... they were looking past me to Audrey's bloodline!"

A sharp screech of tires cut through the gathering gloom.

A sleek black town car pulled abruptly to the curb fifty feet ahead. Derek’s heart leaped with a sickening surge of false hope. "Julianna!" he blurted out.

Julianna Croft, having been escorted off the grounds through the secondary gate with her single duffel bag, scrambled toward the waiting vehicle. But as she reached for the handle, two unmarked dark sedans boxed the town car in with military precision. Four men in crisp charcoal trench coats stepped out, badges hanging from silver chains around their necks.

"Julianna Croft?" the lead agent announced, his voice carrying clearly across the quiet country lane. "Special Agent Miller, Federal Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation Division. We have an active warrant for your arrest regarding unauthorized wire transfers exceeding forty-two million dollars from Vance Sovereign subsidiary accounts into offshore domiciles in Nevis and the Cayman Islands."

Julianna’s shriek pierced the dusk. "No! It wasn't me! It was Derek! Derek signed the authorization memos! He told me the money was his personal compensation!"

"You will have every opportunity to present that defense to the United States Attorney," the agent replied coldly as steel handcuffs clicked around her wrists. "Step into the vehicle, Miss Croft."

Derek shrank back against the concrete pillar of the gate, feeling the icy stone press against his spine. Julianna didn't even look back at him. Her tear-streaked face was twisted in venomous loathing as she was shoved into the back of the government sedan, her duffel bag tossed carelessly into the trunk. Within forty seconds, the sedans had accelerated away, leaving only the smell of exhaust and burning rubber in the chilly autumn air.

Two hundred miles to the north, within the silent, vaulted sanctuary of the Vance ancestral estate in Potomac, Audrey sat in the high-backed wing chair by the hearth. Maisie was asleep against her shoulder, breathing with the tiny, fluttering rhythm of a newborn sparrow.

The room smelled of polished mahogany, beeswax, and woodsmoke. Arthur Sterling stood at the mahogany sideboard, pouring two fingers of twenty-five-year-old scotch into a crystal tumbler before setting it gently on the small table beside Audrey.

"Julianna Croft has been remanded into federal custody at the Alexandria detention facility," Arthur said quietly, adjusting his cuffs. "Her attorneys attempted to file an emergency bail application. The magistrate denied it without prejudice after reviewing the forensic wire transfers we provided. She will not see daylight before trial."

Audrey took a slow, measured breath, letting the steady warmth of her daughter’s body soothe the deep ache in her lower abdomen. "And Derek?"

"He and his mother walked three miles in the dark before hailing a commercial cab using the last fifty-dollar bill Evelyn had hidden in the lining of her handbag," Arthur replied with a subtle, razor-thin smile. "The driver dropped them off at a budget motel near Tysons Corner when their credit cards failed the terminal check. Derek has spent the last four hours trying to reach his corporate board members."

"None of them answered," Audrey stated, not as a question, but as a certainty.

"Not a single one," Arthur confirmed. "The board of directors convened in emergency session at six o'clock this evening. Under Section 14 of the Halston Group corporate charter—a clause your grandfather insisted on inserting when he financed Derek’s initial buyout—any chief executive officer implicated in unbonded fiduciary malfeasance is subject to immediate summary termination without severance. By seven-fifteen, the board voted unanimously to strip Derek of all executive authority, dissolve his stock options, and cooperate fully with the Securities and Exchange Commission."

Audrey looked down at Maisie’s tiny fingers curled around the edge of the cashmere blanket. "He thought I was quiet because I was weak, Arthur. He thought my silence was the silence of a woman who had nowhere else to turn."

"A common error among fools who mistake restraint for surrender," Arthur said softly. "What are your orders regarding the family trust?"

May you like

"Lock the vault completely," Audrey said, her voice dropping into a register as hard and cold as iron. "Freeze every contingent dividend. Derek wanted to live like an emperor off my grandfather’s sweat while leaving me to bleed in an empty hospital room. Let him learn what the world feels like when he has to pay for his own air."
