Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Assembly

The grand ballroom of the Willard InterContinental Hotel in downtown Washington was packed to capacity with over two hundred journalists, financial correspondents from Bloomberg and the Wall Street Journal, and syndicated network cameras.
The Halston controversy had exploded across the national news cycle overnight. Tabloid headlines had sensationalized the story into a lurid clash between a young, vulnerable CEO and a shadowy old-money dynasty.
At the front of the room, seated at a private table surrounded by three low-rent attorneys, Derek Halston leaned back, wearing an off-the-rack dark suit his publicist had bought for him on credit. His hair was carefully combed to look weary yet dignified. Evelyn sat beside him, clutching a lace handkerchief, ready to produce tears on command.
"Remember," Derek whispered to his mother out of the corner of his mouth, "the moment she steps to the podium, look down at the floor and weep. The cameras need to see a devastated grandmother. If we make this ugly enough, the Vance board will authorize a fifty-million-dollar non-disclosure payout before the noon markets close."
"I know how to act, Derek," Evelyn muttered back, dabbing at her dry eyes. "Make sure you mention the baby's feeding schedule. It makes her look negligent."
The side doors of the ballroom swung open.
A sudden, breathless silence fell over the room as private security officers cleared a wide path through the center aisle.
Audrey Vance walked into the room.
She did not look like a woman broken by postpartum recovery. She wore an immaculate, bespoke ivory wool suit with clean, architectural lines, a single strand of heirloom pearls around her throat, and her dark hair pulled back into an elegant chignon. Her carriage was sovereign, her gaze level and unblinking.
Flanking her were Arthur Sterling and Dr. Evelyn Bennett, followed by two uniformed senior investigators from the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Child Protective Services and a representative from the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia.
Audrey did not sit. She walked directly to the lectern, adjusting the bank of microphones with steady, unhurried fingers.
"Good morning," Audrey said, her voice clear, resonant, and completely devoid of tremor.
Derek smirked from his table, crossing his arms, waiting for the defensive excuses.
"Over the past forty-eight hours," Audrey continued calmly, "Mr. Derek Halston has launched a coordinated media campaign alleging that I am an unfit mother, that I suffer from severe psychiatric impairment, and that he has been unlawfully separated from his child."
The camera shutters clicked in a deafening, continuous roar.
"I have spent the last six years protecting the reputation of the Halston Group out of deference to my marriage," Audrey said, her eyes turning across the stage to lock directly onto Derek’s. "That protection is permanently revoked."
Audrey gestured to the two massive high-definition monitors flanking the stage.
"Displayed behind me are three distinct pieces of evidence," Audrey announced.
The left screen flickered to life. It displayed the official hospital admittance records and telemetry logs from Reston Hospital Center dated October 14th, from 8:14 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.
"This is the clinical record of my emergency cesarean section," Audrey stated, her voice slicing through the silent room like a scalpel. "Beside it is the certified cellular carrier log of Mr. Derek Halston’s mobile phone. Over a three-hour window during which my child and I were in acute critical condition, thirty-four emergency calls were placed to Mr. Halston from the surgical triage unit. Every single call was manually rejected."
A collective murmur rippled through the press corps. Derek’s smirk began to freeze on his face.
"Now look at the right screen," Audrey said.
The second monitor illuminated, playing high-resolution, time-stamped security footage from the master suite of the Great Falls estate. The audio was crystal clear.
The entire ballroom listened in horrified silence as Derek’s recorded voice echoed through the speakers: *“To fresh starts, darling. No more sneaking around hotels. No more playing second fiddle to a woman who doesn't even know how to run a household.”*
The video showed Julianna Croft drinking champagne from Audrey’s crystal flutes while Derek laughed, casually tossing his wife's emergency medical notifications onto the bedside table.
Evelyn Halston gasped aloud, dropping her handkerchief as several journalists turned their cameras directly into her face.
"Furthermore," Audrey continued, not pausing for a single beat, "I submit to the Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission the forensic audit of Halston Holdings. Over the past twenty-four months, Mr. Halston embezzled seventy-four million dollars from commercial credit facilities guaranteed by my family's sovereign trust, funneling those funds into shell entities controlled by his mistress, Miss Julianna Croft, who is currently held without bail on multiple federal counts of wire fraud."
Derek shot to his feet, his chair screeching violently against the floor. "Turn that off! That footage is illegal! This is a smear campaign!"
Arthur Sterling stepped forward to the secondary microphone. "The surveillance system within the Great Falls residence was installed and owned entirely by Vance Sovereign Properties, LLC, Mr. Halston. All occupants signed explicit statutory notifications regarding premises monitoring upon executing their lease agreements three years ago. The footage has already been entered into the federal evidentiary docket."
Audrey looked Derek dead in the eye. "You did not build a company, Derek. You occupied a facade. You did not love a daughter; you saw her as an inconvenient obstacle to your vanity. You abandoned your wife while she was on an operating table, and you celebrated your betrayal in our bed before my stitches were dry."
Audrey paused, her silence carrying ten times the weight of any shout.
"The Fairfax County Circuit Court has just issued a permanent, non-appealable order terminating all parental rights of Derek Halston based on voluntary abandonment under Title 63.2 of the Virginia Code," Audrey declared smoothly. "You have no daughter, Derek. You have no fortune. You have no name."
Two federal marshals stepped out from the shadows near the ballroom exit and walked directly toward Derek’s table.
"Derek Halston," the lead marshal announced, drawing a pair of heavy steel restraints. "You are under arrest pursuant to a federal grand jury indictment for bank fraud, wire fraud, and aggravated identity theft. Place your hands behind your back."
Evelyn began to scream, flailing wildly as flashbulbs exploded in their faces like lightning strikes. Derek stood frozen, his jaw slack, his face draining of all blood until he looked like a walking corpse. As the cold steel clicked around his wrists, his eyes searched Audrey’s face across the sea of reporters, pleading silently for a single flicker of mercy.

Audrey did not blink. She turned away from the lectern, walked down the stairs with Arthur at her side, and vanished into the private security corridor without looking back once.
