Chapter 6 - The Fall from Grace

Twenty minutes felt like an executioner's countdown.
Upstairs, Julianna frantically stuffed her designer dresses into a single duffel bag, sobbing with rage. When she tried to grab Audrey’s diamond necklace from the dresser, a female sheriff’s deputy firmly gripped her wrist and twisted it away.
"Drop it, ma'am," the deputy said coldly. "That belongs to Mrs. Vance. Everything in this armoire is cataloged. Step away from the vanity."
"This is ridiculous!" Julianna shrieked, tears ruining her expensive makeup. "I didn't steal anything! Derek gave it to me!"
"Then Derek gave you stolen property," the deputy replied, escorting her toward the staircase by her elbow.
Downstairs, the scene was pure chaos. Evelyn was hyperventilating on the front porch, her expensive charcoal blazer disheveled, clutching her leather purse as private security officers changed the electronic deadbolts on the heavy mahogany doors with cordless drills. The whining screech of the power tools sounded like the death rattle of the Halston family’s social existence.
Derek stood on the driveway in his bathrobe, barefoot on the cold gravel, watching as two tow trucks backed toward the garage to haul away his prized sports cars.
"Arthur! Please!" Derek begged, completely abandoning his pride, dropping to his knees before Arthur Sterling. "Let me speak to Audrey! Just put her on the phone! I love her! I made a mistake, Julianna meant nothing to me! It was just temporary madness! Audrey knows my heart! We have six years together! Let me talk to my wife!"
Arthur looked down at the pathetic figure groveling at his polished shoes. He pulled out his phone, which was already connected to an encrypted line on speakerphone.
From the speaker came the unmistakable, soft sound of a baby cooing, followed by the quiet, measured breathing of Audrey Vance.
"Derek," Audrey’s voice came through the speaker, as calm and still as a frozen lake.
Derek scrambled forward on his knees, his hands reaching desperately toward the phone. "Audrey! Audrey, baby, please! Listen to me! It was all Julianna’s fault! She seduced me, she manipulated me! And my mother—you know how overbearing my mother is, she forced me into this! Audrey, I'm the father of your baby! Think about Maisie! She needs a father! Don't destroy our family over a stupid mistake!"
A chilling silence hung over the driveway. Even the security guards paused for a fraction of a second, disgusted by the sheer cowardice of the man.
On the other end of the line, Audrey let out a quiet sigh.
"When I was in labor, Derek, the doctor told me my blood pressure was spiking dangerously," Audrey said, her voice clear, steady, and devoid of hatred. "I dialed your number seventeen times. I wasn't calling to complain. I was calling because the doctors told me there was a chance I wouldn't survive the delivery, and I wanted Maisie to have her father beside her if I closed my eyes."
Derek choked on his own breath, his eyes widening in horror. "Audrey... I... I didn't know..."
"You didn't know because you didn't care," Audrey continued. "You were drinking champagne in our bed, celebrating your conquest with your mistress and your mother, laughing about how weak and common I was. You told Julianna that this house needed someone with real presence."
"Audrey, please—"
"You wanted power, Derek. You wanted status," Audrey whispered. "Now you have neither. Enjoy your new life. You'll find that without my grandfather’s name on your bank guarantees, the world is remarkably cold."
The call clicked off.
"Audrey! Audrey!" Derek screamed into the dead phone, slamming his fists against the gravel driveway until his knuckles bled.
Julianna stormed down the steps, hauling her duffel bag. She glared at Derek with pure, venomous loathing.
"You absolute fraud!" she spat, kicking gravel at his bare feet. "You dragged me into this mess! My father’s reputation is going to be destroyed when the municipal board finds out your company is in default! You told me you were a billionaire!"
"Get away from me, you gold-digging whore!" Derek snarled, scrambling to his feet, lunging toward her. "You took four million dollars from my accounts!"
"Embezzled funds, Mr. Halston," Arthur interjected with icy precision. "Which means Miss Croft will be arrested by federal financial auditors before she reaches the airport. And as for you, Derek... your bank accounts have been placed under federal receivership. Your personal credit cards are deactivated. You are officially bankrupt."
The sheriff’s deputies escorted the three of them past the outer gates.
The heavy, black iron gates swung shut with a resounding, metallic clank. The electronic locks engaged, sealing the Great Falls estate forever.
Standing on the public shoulder of the highway, barefoot in his robe, with his hysterical mother sobbing on the grass beside him and his mistress cursing him to high heaven, Derek Halston looked up at the towering security cameras.
He had thought Audrey was his submissive wife, a quiet shadow who lived only to serve his vanity.
In reality, she was the monarch who had built his kingdom—and with a single whisper, she had burned it to the ground.
Far away, across the state line in the fortified sanctuary of the Vance Potomac Estate, Audrey Vance sat by the roaring fireplace of the grand library.
Dr. Bennett finished checking Maisie’s vital signs, smiling warmly. "She’s perfectly healthy, Audrey. Strong lungs, beautiful heart. And your recovery is progressing wonderfully."
"Thank you, Doctor," Audrey said, cradling Maisie in her arms.
Arthur walked into the library, slipping his coat off and hanging it on the antique stand. He approached the fireplace, setting a leather-bound file on the table.
"The eviction is complete," Arthur said quietly. "The Halston Group filed for Chapter 7 liquidation ten minutes ago. Derek’s creditors have already begun seizing his commercial assets. He is ruined, Audrey. Utterly and completely."
Audrey looked down at Maisie’s peaceful, sleeping face.

The nightmare was over. The deceit was purged.
"Good," Audrey said softly, leaning down to press a warm, gentle kiss against her daughter’s forehead. "Now, Arthur... let’s talk about building something that will truly last."
