Chapter 7 - The Trial Begins

The courtroom of Judge Harrison was packed to capacity when the gavel struck to open the civil and criminal consolidated trial.
Ethan sat at the defense table in an orange jumpsuit, looking hollow, exhausted, and broken. The arrogance that had once defined him was completely gone, replaced by the panicked desperation of a man facing twenty years behind bars and total financial ruin. Victoria sat three rows back, her face hidden behind oversized designer sunglasses, refusing to meet anyone's eye.
My attorney, Jonathan Vance, stood before the bench, laying out our case with surgical precision.
"Your Honor, the state presents irrefutable physical, digital, and financial evidence that Ethan Carter, in active conspiracy with his mother Victoria Carter and co-conspirator Chloe Sterling, systematically plotted to defraud the primary heir of the Sterling Estate through financial coercion, corporate embezzlement, and ultimately, deliberate physical violence."
Vance played the doorbell camera footage on the courtroom’s massive monitors.
The courtroom went dead silent as the horrifying video played for all to see: Ethan shouting at me, shoving the papers into my chest, the vicious swing of the brick, my body collapsing against the porch column, and Victoria standing in the doorway laughing, clapping her hands with a cold smile.
Judge Harrison watched the screen, his expression darkening with profound disgust. When the video ended, he slowly looked over his glasses at the defense table.
"Mr. Carter," the judge said coldly. "Do you care to explain what we just witnessed?"
Ethan’s defense attorney stammered, standing up quickly. "Your Honor, my client maintains that the physical altercation was a tragic accident resulting from a mutual domestic dispute—"
"A tragic accident involving a masonry brick swung directly at the victim’s face while a third party cheered?" Judge Harrison cut him off sharply, slamming his pen down on the desk. "Counsel, insult the intelligence of this court again, and I will hold you in contempt."
Ethan slumped forward in his chair, burying his face in his cuffed hands. He finally realized that no amount of legal spinning, PR campaigns, or fabricated sob stories could rewrite the brutal reality of what he had done.
Vance stepped forward again, holding up the final piece of evidence. "Furthermore, Your Honor, pursuant to the forfeiture clause of the Margaret Sterling Living Trust, we formally request an immediate summary judgment stripping Ethan Carter of all marital assets, corporate shares, residential rights, and alimony claims."

Judge Harrison didn't hesitate for a second.
"Granted," the judge declared, bringing his gavel down with a sharp, echoing crack.
