Chapter 1 - The Cold Blade of Betrayal

The sterile smell of antiseptic and emergency bleach clung to my skin as I woke up under the glaring fluorescent lights of St. Jude Memorial Hospital. My left cheek throbbed with a dull, heavy agony, stitched shut and swathed in thick white gauze. Every heartbeat sent a spike of sharp pain radiating right up into my temple.

Yet, physical pain was nothing compared to the cold fury burning in my chest.

Six years. I had given Ethan Carter six years of my life, my patience, and my unconditional support when his struggling architectural firm was on the verge of bankruptcy. I had stood by him through endless late nights, defended him against friends who called him an opportunist, and trusted him blindly.

And how did he repay me? By shattering a brick across my face on our front porch while his mother smiled like a spectator at a Roman arena, all so he could force me into signing away my birthright.

The door to my hospital room clicked open. Officer Miller stepped inside, his notepad ready, a sympathetic look in his tired eyes.

"Good afternoon, Mrs. Carter," he said gently, pulling a chair up to the bedside. "The surgeons did an incredible job with the reconstructive work on your cheekbone and jaw. You’re going to heal, though it will take time. But we need to talk about what happened on that porch."

I swallowed past a dry throat, my voice raspy and cold. "Where is Ethan?"

Officer Miller exchanged a brief glance with the doorway. "He hasn't left the hospital parking lot, but we haven't detained him yet. His attorney is already spinning a narrative. They claim it was a terrible accident—that Ethan was holding a landscaping brick during property maintenance, you stumbled during an argument, and he accidentally dropped it. They are calling it a tragic domestic mishap."

A bitter, humorless laugh escaped my lips, immediately sending a jolt of pain through my jaw. I winced, pressing a trembling hand against the blanket. "An accident? With six neighbors recording and an electrician as an eyewitness? Victoria was standing right there cheering him on, and my sister Chloe was standing beside her in his favorite black dress."

Officer Miller blinked, leaning forward. "Your sister? The woman in the black dress was your sister?"

"Chloe," I whispered, my eyes narrowing into slits of pure ice. "They’ve been sleeping together for months. And more importantly, they’ve been plotting to steal my grandmother’s multi-million-dollar estate."

The detective tapped his pen against his notepad. "That's a very serious accusation, Emma. Do you have proof of the financial conspiracy?"

"Better than proof," I said, my voice dropping an octave as resolve hardened inside me. "I have my grandmother’s will, a locked safe at her old estate, and a clause that Ethan doesn't even know exists. He thinks that brick bought him my company shares, our home, and my entire livelihood. But he just signed his own financial death warrant."

Officer Miller stopped writing and looked up, caught off guard by the sudden, unshakable chill in my tone. "What kind of clause, Mrs. Carter?"

"The kind that turns a violent assault into total asset forfeiture," I replied, staring blankly at the hospital window where the afternoon sun cast long, hard shadows. "Ethan wanted a war. I’m going to give him total annihilation."
