Chapter 8 - THE BROTHER WHO TALKED

Jason arrived at Claire's lawyer's office the following morning.

He looked terrified.

“I didn't know where else to go.”

Claire stared at him.

“You were at the hospital.”

Jason nodded.

“I saw everything.”

“Why didn't you stop him?”

His eyes filled with shame.

“I was afraid.”

“Of Ryan?”

“Of my mother.”

Claire sat down.

Jason explained.

He had watched the family cover up problems for years.

He knew about the money.

He knew about Emily.

He knew about Noah.

But he had never known the full extent of the fraud.

Until the night Claire was hospitalized.

“I saw Linda give Ryan something.”

“What?”

“A folder.”

“What was inside?”

“I don't know.”

Claire looked at him.

“Then why contact me?”

“Because I found out.”

“What?”

Jason pulled out his phone.

He showed her a video.

Ryan and Linda were meeting a private investigator.

The investigator had been hired to track Claire.

Not just financially.

Personally.

Her daily schedule.

Her workplace.

Her friends.

Her family.

Everything.

Claire felt sick.

“Why?”

Jason swallowed.

“They were afraid you would leave.”

Claire stared.

“They knew?”

“They knew you were planning to divorce him.”

Claire hadn't even told anyone.

Except Daniel.

“How?”

Jason looked at her.

“Ryan found your draft divorce petition.”

Claire remembered.

She had written it months earlier.

She had never filed it.

She had hidden it on her laptop.

Ryan had found it.

That explained everything.

He had known she was preparing to leave.

And instead of changing, he had escalated.

---

Jason handed Daniel another file.

“This is everything I have.”

Daniel opened it.

There were emails.

Bank records.

Private investigator invoices.

Photographs.

And one document labeled:

PLAN B.

Claire stared at it.

Daniel opened the document.

The first instruction was simple:

If Claire attempts divorce, accuse her of financial misconduct.

The second:

Transfer assets into protected entities.

The third:

Discredit her professionally.

The fourth:

If necessary, use medical history to establish instability.

Claire's face went pale.

“They planned to destroy me.”

Daniel nodded.

“That's what this document suggests.”

Jason looked down.

“I was supposed to help.”

Claire looked at him.

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because I saw you at the hospital.”

He swallowed.

“You were terrified.”

Claire's eyes softened slightly.

Jason continued.

“And Ryan didn't look sorry.”

---

That afternoon, prosecutors confronted Linda with the Plan B document.

She denied creating it.

Then handwriting experts compared the writing.

It matched.

Linda's attorney requested a recess.

But the damage was done.

The prosecution now had evidence of deliberate planning.

Not only to hide financial crimes.

But to discredit Claire if she tried to leave.

---

Ryan finally broke.

He requested a private meeting with prosecutors.

“I'll cooperate.”

His attorney looked stunned.

“You understand what you're saying?”

“Yes.”

“What do you want?”

Ryan stared at the floor.

“Protection.”

The prosecutor asked:

“From whom?”

Ryan whispered:

“My mother.”

He began talking.

He described the fake companies.

The invoices.

The offshore account.

The foundation.

The private investigator.

The money.

Everything.

Then he said something unexpected.

“There was another person.”

The prosecutor looked up.

“Who?”

Ryan shook his head.

“You don't understand.”

“Then explain.”

“My mother wasn't the one who started it.”

Silence.

“Who did?”

Ryan looked toward the door.

Then whispered:

“My father.”

---

Claire received the news that evening.

She stared at Daniel.

“His father died eight years ago.”

Daniel nodded.

“Apparently the operation began long before that.”

Claire looked at the files.

The fraud wasn't three years old.

It wasn't seven years old.

It might have been running for more than a decade.

Then Daniel found an old corporate record.

The original company wasn't called Mercer Construction.

It had another name.

And the registered owner wasn't Ryan's father.

It was someone else.

Claire looked at the name.

Her stomach dropped.

“Who is that?”

Daniel looked at her.

“The person who signed your first mortgage.”

Claire stared.

May you like

Her own father.
