Chapter 7 - THE HEARING

The courthouse was packed.
Reporters had discovered the case.
What had begun as a private domestic dispute had become a financial investigation involving millions of dollars.
Claire entered through a side entrance.
Ryan was brought in through another.
For the first time in three years, they saw each other.
Ryan looked thinner.
Tired.
But Claire noticed something else.
He wasn't angry.
He was afraid.
The judge reviewed the protection-order request.
Ryan's attorney argued that the hospital incident had been exaggerated.
Daniel presented photographs.
Medical records.
The nurse's statement.
The social worker's report.
Then came the financial evidence.
Fraudulent invoices.
Bank transfers.
Shell companies.
Offshore accounts.
The judge listened carefully.
Finally, Daniel presented the recording from Emily.
Ryan's own voice filled the courtroom.
If you tell Claire, you'll regret it.
Ryan closed his eyes.
Linda sat behind him.
She looked furious.
Then the prosecutor introduced a new piece of evidence.
The black notebook.
Linda's face changed.
Ryan turned toward her.
“You had it.”
Linda whispered:
“Not anymore.”
The prosecutor opened it.
Names.
Dates.
Payments.
Bribes.
Hidden accounts.
Every page connected another person.
Then the prosecutor reached a section marked:
CLAIRE.
Claire felt cold.
“What is that?”
Daniel leaned toward her.
“Don't react.”
The prosecutor read:
Claire Mercer — monitor financial activity.
Claire Mercer — monitor movements.
Claire Mercer — possible discovery risk.
Claire stared.
She had been monitored.
For months.
Then another entry:
If discovery occurs, activate Plan B.
The judge stopped proceedings.
“What is Plan B?”
No one answered.
---
During the recess, Ryan approached Claire.
Two officers stood nearby.
“Claire.”
She turned.
“Don't.”
“I need to explain.”
“You had three years.”
“I was trapped.”
She almost laughed.
“By whom?”
“My mother.”
Claire stared at him.
“You signed the invoices.”
“I know.”
“You lied to me.”
“I know.”
“You hit me.”
Ryan's eyes lowered.
“I know.”
Claire's voice became quiet.
“You don't get to say you know.”
He looked up.
“I loved you.”
“No.”
Ryan swallowed.
“You did.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“You loved having control over me.”
Ryan didn't answer.
Claire stepped closer.
“And you loved your mother more than you ever loved me.”
His face broke.
“That isn't true.”
“Then why did you let her do this?”
“I thought I could fix it.”
“You made it worse.”
“I know.”
Claire looked at him.
“That's the only honest thing you've said.”
She walked away.
---
Outside the courthouse, reporters surrounded Linda.
“Mrs. Mercer, did you steal millions from your son's company?”
“Did you monitor Claire Mercer?”
“Did you know Ryan abused his wife?”
Linda stopped.
For a moment, she looked directly at the cameras.
Then she said:
“Claire destroyed my family.”
The statement spread across social media within minutes.
Claire watched the clip from her hotel room.
Daniel sat beside her.
“She is trying to make herself the victim.”
Claire nodded.
“I know.”
“Are you okay?”
Claire looked at the screen.
“No.”
Daniel waited.
“But I'm not going back.”
---
That night, the anonymous person contacted her again.
You heard Plan B.
Claire replied:
Who are you?
The answer came immediately.
Someone who was there the night Ryan hit you.
Claire's heart stopped.
She typed:
Who?
The reply:
The hospital security guard wasn't the only witness.
Then a video appeared.
Claire opened it.
The footage showed the hospital parking lot.
Ryan was standing beside his truck.
He was talking to someone.
Linda.
But that wasn't what shocked Claire.
Linda was holding a folder.
Ryan was saying:
“We need to make sure she doesn't remember.”
Claire froze.
The video continued.
Linda answered:
“She won't.”
Claire stared at the screen.
Daniel leaned forward.
“That's important.”
Claire nodded.
Then the video showed something else.
A third person.
Standing behind the hospital wall.
Watching them.
The anonymous sender wrote:
Now you know who I am.
The video paused.
The face became visible.
Claire whispered:
“No…”
She knew him.
He was one of Ryan's brothers.
May you like
Jason.
