Chapter 5 - THE CHILD RYAN NEVER MENTIONED

Claire couldn't breathe.
She stared at the photograph.
Ryan was smiling.
Not the cold smile she knew.
A real smile.
His arm was around the boy.
The boy had Ryan's eyes.
Claire called Daniel.
He arrived within twenty minutes.
She showed him the photograph.
Daniel studied it carefully.
“We don't assume anything yet.”
“But look at him.”
“I see the resemblance.”
“Who is he?”
“We find out.”
They searched public records.
Nothing.
The photograph appeared to have been taken at a private event.
The location was a children's charity.
The boy's name was not visible.
Claire searched every available document.
Then Emily called.
“I know who he is.”
Claire answered immediately.
“Who?”
“His name is Noah.”
Claire closed her eyes.
“How old?”
“Five.”
“Is he Ryan's son?”
Silence.
“Yes.”
Claire felt something inside her crack.
“How long have you known?”
“Ryan told me two years ago.”
“Why didn't he tell me?”
“Because he didn't want you to know.”
Claire's hands trembled.
“Who is the mother?”
Emily hesitated.
“Her name is Sarah.”
“Where is she?”
“I don't know.”
Emily paused.
“But Ryan sends her money.”
“How much?”
“Every month.”
Claire looked at Daniel.
Another hidden account.
Another secret.
Another lie.
---
Ryan returned home that night.
His apartment felt unfamiliar.
Every room reminded him of Claire.
Her books.
Her photographs.
Her coffee mug.
But the silence was worse.
His phone buzzed.
A message from Claire.
Who is Noah?
Ryan froze.
He stared at the screen.
Then another message arrived.
Don't lie to me.
Ryan threw the phone onto the couch.
Linda called.
“Did she find out?”
“Yes.”
Linda cursed.
“How?”
“I don't know.”
“You need to control this.”
Ryan laughed bitterly.
“You've been telling me to control things for three years.”
“Don't blame me.”
“You made me hide everything.”
“You agreed.”
Ryan went silent.
Linda lowered her voice.
“If Sarah talks, we're finished.”
Ryan's stomach tightened.
“What does Sarah know?”
“Everything.”
---
Sarah lived two states away.
She was raising Noah alone.
When Claire contacted her, Sarah initially refused to speak.
Then Claire sent one photograph.
Ryan standing with Noah.
Sarah called back.
“I don't want trouble.”
“Neither do I.”
“Then leave us alone.”
Claire's voice softened.
“Sarah, I don't want anything from you.”
“Why are you calling?”
“I need the truth.”
Sarah was silent.
Finally she said:
“Ryan told me you were his problem.”
Claire closed her eyes.
“He said that?”
“Yes.”
“What else?”
“He said you were rich.”
Claire almost laughed.
“I wasn't.”
“He said you had money.”
“I didn't.”
Sarah sighed.
“He promised he would eventually leave you.”
Claire felt nothing now.
Not anger.
Not jealousy.
Just exhaustion.
“Did he give you money?”
“Yes.”
“How much?”
“$3,000 a month.”
Claire looked at Daniel.
“For five years?”
“Yes.”
Claire calculated.
Nearly $180,000.
Daniel whispered:
“Another financial trail.”
Sarah continued.
“But the money stopped last month.”
“Why?”
“Linda told him to stop.”
Claire's eyes narrowed.
“Why?”
Sarah hesitated.
“Because they were afraid of something.”
“What?”
“She said you were investigating.”
Claire leaned back.
The puzzle was finally beginning to form.
---
Two days later, Sarah came to the city.
She brought Noah.
Claire met them at a quiet park.
Noah looked at Claire.
“Are you Aunt Claire?”
Claire smiled gently.
“No. I'm Claire.”
“My dad said you were mean.”
Claire felt her heart sink.
“What else did he say?”
“That you wanted to take his money.”
Claire knelt.
“Did he tell you your dad was a good man?”
Noah nodded.
Claire smiled sadly.
“Adults sometimes tell children things that aren't true.”
Sarah looked away.
Claire didn't say anything else.
She didn't want Noah caught in the middle.
Instead, Sarah handed her a folder.
Inside were bank transfers.
Messages from Ryan.
Photographs.
A copy of a birth certificate.
Ryan was Noah's biological father.
But there was more.
One document showed Ryan had listed Noah as a dependent on a private insurance policy.
Another showed he had created a trust.
Claire looked at the trust documents.
The beneficiary was Noah.
The trustee was Linda.
And the funding came from company money.
Claire stared at the page.
Linda hadn't just stolen money.
She had moved company funds into a private trust.
Daniel looked at it.
“This may be the connection we've been looking for.”
Claire nodded.
Then she noticed something.
A handwritten note at the bottom.
If Claire discovers this, activate Plan B.
Claire's blood ran cold.
“What is Plan B?”
Nobody knew.
Until Ryan's attorney called Daniel.
“We need to talk.”
---
The meeting happened the next morning.
Ryan's attorney looked exhausted.
“I am withdrawing as counsel.”
Daniel raised an eyebrow.
“Why?”
“Because my client has withheld information from me.”
“What information?”
The attorney looked at Claire.
Then handed Daniel a document.
“Ryan has another company.”
Claire stared at the page.
The company was registered overseas.
Its account contained millions.
Money had been transferred there over several years.
Claire looked at Daniel.
“How much?”
The attorney answered quietly.
“Approximately six million dollars.”
Claire closed her eyes.
The entire room became silent.
Then Daniel asked:
“Where is Ryan now?”
The attorney hesitated.
“He left this morning.”
“Where?”
“No one knows.”
Claire's phone vibrated.
A message appeared.
From Ryan.
You should have left me alone.
Then another.
May you like
Now you're going to find out what I am capable of.
