Chapter 6 - THE DISAPPEARANCE

Ryan disappeared for four days.
His phone was off.
His car was abandoned at the airport.
His passport showed no recent departure.
Claire's attorney immediately notified investigators.
But Claire wasn't afraid.
Not anymore.
She had spent three years being afraid of what Ryan might do.
Now she was afraid of what he might destroy.
On the fifth morning, Daniel called.
“We found the offshore account.”
Claire answered immediately.
“Where?”
“Not offshore.”
“What?”
“It's in the United States.”
“Then why hide it?”
“Because it's registered through a foreign corporation.”
“How much?”
“Six-point-three million.”
Claire sat down.
“Where did it come from?”
“Construction payments.”
“And the account owner?”
Daniel paused.
“Ryan.”
Claire closed her eyes.
“Then why did he tell me we were struggling?”
Daniel didn't answer.
Because the answer was obvious.
He had been lying.
---
Ryan was hiding in an old cabin owned by one of his friends.
He sat in darkness, staring at his phone.
Linda had stopped answering.
His brothers had stopped answering.
His employees avoided him.
His attorney had withdrawn.
His company accounts were frozen.
Everything was collapsing.
Then someone knocked.
Ryan reached for the gun he kept in a drawer.
“Who is it?”
“It's me.”
Linda.
Ryan opened the door.
She stepped inside.
“You need to come with me.”
“Where?”
“Somewhere safe.”
Ryan laughed.
“Safe?”
“You're being investigated.”
“So are you.”
Linda's face hardened.
“You think this is my fault?”
“You taught me.”
“I taught you how to survive.”
“You taught me how to lie.”
Linda slapped him.
Ryan stared at her.
Then smiled.
“That was the first honest thing you've done in years.”
Linda's eyes filled with rage.
“You think Claire will forgive you?”
“I don't care.”
“You should.”
“Why?”
“Because she has everything.”
Ryan's smile disappeared.
“What do you mean?”
Linda opened her purse.
Inside was the black notebook.
Ryan stared at it.
“You found it?”
“No.”
“Then where did you get it?”
Linda didn't answer.
Ryan reached for it.
Linda pulled it away.
“You don't get to see it.”
“Mom.”
“There are names in here.”
“Give it to me.”
“Some of them belong to people more powerful than you.”
Ryan stopped.
“What did you do?”
Linda whispered:
“I protected us.”
Ryan stared at her.
Then asked:
“From who?”
Linda looked toward the door.
“Everyone.”
---
Meanwhile, Claire sat with Marcus reviewing the company's accounting records.
A pattern emerged.
Every time Ryan transferred money into the offshore account, Linda transferred money somewhere else.
Political donations.
Private investments.
Luxury properties.
Consulting payments.
And one strange category:
Security Services.
Claire pointed at it.
“What is that?”
Marcus opened the file.
“Private security firm.”
“Why would Linda need security?”
“I don't know.”
“Find out.”
Two hours later, Marcus called.
“The security company doesn't exist anymore.”
Claire frowned.
“When did it close?”
“Three years ago.”
“Yet Linda paid them last month.”
Claire looked at Daniel.
“That isn't possible.”
“Exactly.”
---
The next day, investigators searched Linda's house.
They found documents.
Phones.
Hard drives.
And a hidden safe.
Inside the safe was a single envelope.
The envelope contained photographs.
Claire looked at them later.
The first showed Linda meeting a businessman.
The second showed Ryan meeting the same man.
The third showed Claire.
Claire stared.
The photograph had been taken outside her office six months earlier.
Someone had been following her.
Daniel's face tightened.
“This is no longer just financial fraud.”
Claire looked at him.
“What is it?”
“Surveillance.”
Claire remembered the feeling.
The strange car near her apartment.
The footsteps behind her.
The anonymous messages.
Maybe the person helping her wasn't trying to manipulate her.
Maybe they had been watching the Mercers for months.
---
That evening, Claire received another anonymous call.
She answered.
“Hello?”
A distorted voice said:
“Ryan isn't the person you should be afraid of.”
Claire froze.
“Who are you?”
“You've been looking in the wrong direction.”
“What does that mean?”
“Ask Linda about the Mercer Foundation.”
Claire's heart skipped.
“The foundation?”
“Yes.”
“What is it?”
“You'll find the missing money.”
The call ended.
Claire immediately searched corporate records.
The Mercer Family Foundation had existed for seven years.
Its public mission was charitable.
But its financial filings showed something strange.
Nearly half its donations came from Mercer Construction.
And nearly all of its expenses went to one consulting company.
The same company that didn't exist.
Claire whispered:
“It's all connected.”
Daniel nodded.
“Now we just need to prove it.”
---
The next morning, the police found Ryan.
He was sitting outside a courthouse.
Alone.
When officers approached, he didn't resist.
He simply said:
“I want a lawyer.”
Then he looked directly at one detective.
May you like
“And I want to talk to Claire.”
