Chapter 5 - The Corporate Takeover

The boardroom of Vance Technologies was packed to capacity. Journalists, board members, minority shareholders, and federal investigators filled every available seat around the massive U-shaped glass conference table.
At the center seat—the one traditionally reserved for the CEO and Chairman of the Board—sat me.
To my left stood my legal counsel, a shark-like corporate litigator named Marcus Vance—unrelated to the disgraced family, thankfully. To my right sat the lead forensic accountant assigned to untangle the decades of financial fraud committed by Richard and Eleanor.
The heavy glass doors pushed open, and Julian walked in. He looked defeated, hollowed out, wearing a rumpled suit with no tie. He looked around the room, avoiding the gaze of every single person present, before walking slowly toward the witness podium at the front of the room.
"Mr. Vance," the lead federal investigator spoke up, his voice echoing in the quiet room. "Please state your name and your current relationship to Vance Technologies."
"Julian Vance," he muttered, staring down at his polished shoes. "Former Chief Executive Officer. Currently... currently holding no official executive position."
"Mr. Vance, please review the document displayed on the main screen," the investigator instructed.
A massive digital projector illuminated the wall behind the podium, displaying a binding corporate restructuring agreement dated yesterday afternoon, signed by the majority stakeholder and registered patent holder: Maya Vance.
"Do you recognize this document?" the investigator asked.
Julian swallowed hard, his voice trembling slightly as he looked up at me from across the room. Our eyes locked for a fraction of a second—a lifetime of shared memories, broken promises, and unforgivable betrayal flashing between us in the silence.
"I do," Julian whispered. "It is the intellectual property reassignment and majority equity transfer agreement."
"And who does that agreement grant full operational control and asset ownership to?"
Julian closed his eyes for a long moment, taking a deep, shuddering breath.
"To my wife," he said, the words tasting like ash in his mouth. "Maya Vance."
A murmur rippled through the gallery of reporters and shareholders. Flashbulbs went off like a thunderstorm, capturing every angle of the historic corporate coup.
I didn't smile. I didn't gloat. I simply looked down at my hand resting gently against my slightly rounded stomach, feeling the faint, reassuring flutter of life within me. They tried to bury me. They tried to silence my child. But all they had succeeded in doing was planting a seed of absolute, unbreakable power.

"The board recognizes the transfer," the lead director announced, striking his gavel once against the mahogany podium. "Vance Technologies is now officially restructured under the leadership of CEO Maya Vance."
The room erupted into chatter, but I remained completely still, my gaze fixed on the future.
