Chapter 4 - The Interrogation Room

The sterile, fluorescent lighting of the county interrogation room hummed quietly overhead. In the corner, a digital clock blinked glowing red numbers: 2:14 PM.

Across the steel table sat Eleanor Vance. Gone was the immaculate society matriarch draped in pearls and designer silk. In her place sat a cornered, frantic woman wearing an orange holding facility jumpsuit, her hair pulled back into a messy, unstyled bun.

She stared through the one-way glass wall across the room, her jaw clenched tight.

The heavy metal door clicked open, and I walked in, carrying a manila folder under my arm. I wore a clean white blouse and dark trousers, my hair tied back, though a small pale scar remained visible on my forehead where the rock had struck me.

I pulled out the metal chair opposite her and sat down.

Eleanor slowly turned her head, her eyes narrowing into venomous slits. "You think you've won, don't you, you little parasite? You think because you managed to crawl out of a hole that you can take down a family that built this city?"

"I don't think I've won, Eleanor," I said calmly, opening the folder and sliding a stack of financial statements across the table. "I know I have. Because while you were busy planning my funeral, your husband was busy trying to transfer every single remaining asset out of the family accounts to cover his own skin."

Eleanor glanced down at the papers, her breath hitching.

"Those are corporate audit reports from Vance Technologies," I continued evenly. "The company you thought Julian owned outright? Turns out, during our marriage, when Julian was too busy gambling away his inheritance on offshore accounts, I quietly restructured the intellectual property holdings. The core patents—the ones that keep your entire conglomerate afloat—are registered under my maiden name and my personal corporate trust."

Eleanor’s face turned an ugly shade of pale. "That's... that's a lie. Julian said you signed everything over!"

"Julian tells you what you want to hear because he’s terrified of you," I replied, leaning forward, resting my elbows on the table. "Just like he was terrified to tell you that the baby I’m carrying is entirely, unequivocally his. But even if it wasn't—even if I had committed every sin your paranoid mind invented—it still wouldn't give you the right to put me in the ground."

"You ruined our future," Eleanor spat, her voice cracking with suppressed rage. "Sterling Industries was going to inject fifty million dollars into our capital fund! Emily Sterling was supposed to be Julian's wife!"

"Emily Sterling already pulled out of the merger this morning," I smiled faintly. "When the state troopers entered your estate with a search warrant live-streamed to every major news outlet in the tristate area, the Sterling board canceled the partnership within three minutes. Your empire is gone, Eleanor. Your husband is facing twenty years for conspiracy. And your precious son is currently in the next room crying like a toddler, begging me to drop charges."

Eleanor lunged across the table, her hands clawing toward my face, but the heavy metal cuffs bolted to the floor instantly jerked her back with a metallic crash.

She screamed—a raw, primal sound of absolute defeat—slumping forward into her hands as bitter tears finally streamed down her face.

I stood up, gathering my folder, and looked down at her one last time.

"Enjoy your stay," I said quietly, turning toward the door.
