Chapter 3 - The Resurrection Protocol

"Maya..." Julian choked out, his chair screeching backward against the floor as he stumbled to his feet, his face draining of all color until he looked like a corpse. "That's... that's impossible. We buried you three feet deep. The dirt..."

"Wasn't heavy enough to keep me down, Julian," I replied, taking a slow, steady step forward into the sunlit dining hall. Every joint in my body ached, and my abdomen throbbed with a dull, terrifying warning ache, but the adrenaline coursing through my veins kept me upright.

Richard slammed his hands down on the mahogany table, his face flushing a furious crimson. "This is a hallucination! Marcus! Where the hell is security? Get this lunatic out of my house before I have you thrown in a psychiatric ward!"

"Marcus won't be answering your calls, Richard," a crisp, authoritative voice echoed from the foyer behind me.

Two uniformed state troopers stepped past me into the grand dining hall, their hands resting casually on the utility belts at their waists. Right behind them strode Detective Vance—no relation to this wretched family, thank God—followed by a pair of county medical examiners carrying evidence kits.

And walking calmly at the center of the delegation was District Attorney Arthur Pendelton, holding a thick leather portfolio stamped with the state seal.

Eleanor grabbed the edge of the table for support, her chest heaving as she glared at the intruders. "What is the meaning of this? You cannot enter private property without a warrant! Julian, call our legal team immediately!"

"Your legal team is currently being audited by the federal grand jury, Mrs. Vance," District Attorney Pendelton said smoothly, stepping forward and opening his briefcase. He pulled out several certified documents and a digital tablet. "And as for warrants, we didn't just bring a search warrant for the estate. We brought an arrest warrant."

Detective Vance stepped up beside me, gently placing a warm, protective hand on my shoulder to steady me. He looked across the table at Richard and Eleanor.

"Richard Vance, Eleanor Vance, and Chloe Vance," the detective stated clearly, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. "You are being placed under arrest for attempted premeditated homicide, kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment, and conspiracy to commit fraud."

"On whose authority?!" Eleanor shrieked, her regal composure completely shattering as she pointed a trembling, manicured finger at me. "That girl is mentally unstable! She fabricated this entire story for attention! She fell down a ravine on the property and crawled back here to blackmail us!"

I stepped closer to the table, my gaze fixed entirely on my mother-in-law. I reached into the pocket of my ruined gown and pulled out a small, metallic object, placing it gently on the crystal glass in front of her.

Julian’s titanium smart-tag.

"You left the shovel, Eleanor," I said softly, my voice dripping with ice. "You left the tag. And more importantly, when your son dropped his master fob into my grave, he didn't realize that the emergency duress protocol on this device doesn't just open gates—it automatically streams live GPS coordinates, continuous audio, and video logs directly to the county cloud server."

Julian staggered backward, staring at the small metal piece as if it were a venomous snake. "No... that's not possible. I disabled the cloud sync..."

"You forgot to disable the master override that I coded into the system last month, Julian," I replied, turning my gaze to my husband. "Remember? You said you trusted me with your life's work. Turns out, you should have."
