Chapter 9 - The Trial of Gero von Berg

The courtroom of the Federal District Court was packed to capacity. Reporters, legal analysts, and members of the public filled every available seat, all eager to catch a glimpse of the fallen corporate titan.
Gero von Berg sat at the defense table dressed in an orange jumpsuit, his hair slightly unkempt, the polished charm entirely stripped away. He stared blankly at the polished mahogany table, refusing to look up at the gallery where media cameras flashed continuously. The arrogant billionaire who once ruled boardrooms with an iron fist had been reduced to a broken defendant facing decades behind bars.
Judge Sarah Linwood presided over the court with an expression of stern, unyielding professionalism.
“The prosecution may present its primary evidence,” Judge Linwood instructed, her voice echoing through the silent courtroom.
Prosecutor Marcus Vance stepped forward, displaying a large digital screen facing the jury.
“Your Honor, ladies and gentlemen of the jury, the defense would have you believe that the defendant was a pillar of the community suffering from momentary workplace stress,” Mr. Vance began, his voice ringing with quiet intensity. “We will show you that what occurred in that home was not a momentary lapse in judgment, but a calculated, brutal routine of terror and abuse against a pregnant woman.”
He pressed play on the console.
The courtroom fell into an absolute, suffocating silence as the nursery camera footage began to play on the massive screen. The high-definition video projected every agonizing second: Gero towering over his pregnant wife, the sound of the leather belt cutting through the air, the fifty deliberate strikes, and Beate’s terrified, agonizing cries as she curled around her unborn child.
Several jurors gasped, covering their mouths in horror. A murmur of profound disgust rippled through the gallery. Even the defense attorneys looked down at their briefs, unable to find a single legal argument or justification to counter the visceral, undeniable truth playing out before the court.
Gero squeezed his eyes shut, his hands trembling in his lap as the audio of his own cruel voice echoed off the courtroom walls. He realized with terrifying clarity that there was no escape, no PR spin, and no clever loophole that could save him. The digital footprint he had ignored, the camera he had forgotten was watching, had sealed his eternal doom.
Mr. Vance paused the video at the frame where Beate collapsed on the nursery floor.
“This is not a private domestic dispute,” Mr. Vance concluded, turning to face the jury directly. “This is aggravated felony assault, premeditated endangerment, and a gross violation of human dignity. We are asking this court to deliver the maximum possible sentence without parole.”
Judge Linwood looked down at Gero, her gaze as cold and sharp as broken glass.
“Mr. von Berg, do you have anything to say before the court enters its preliminary judgment?”
Gero slowly raised his head, his lips moving soundlessly for a moment before he dropped his gaze back to the floor in total defeat.

“No, Your Honor,” he whispered hoarsely.
The jury didn't even need to deliberate for an hour. The verdict was unanimous, swift, and absolute: Guilty on all counts.
