Chapter 5 - The Trap Springs Shut

Gero tossed his car keys onto the marble foyer table, humming a relaxed tune. The dinner at the Metropole had ended on a high note, and the adrenaline of corporate dominance still coursed through his veins. He loosened his silk tie as he walked down the dimly lit hallway toward the master suite, loosening up for a quiet night before resuming his schedule tomorrow.
As he passed the open door of the master study, something caught his eye.
A sliver of light cut across the dark hardwood floor from inside the room.
Gero stopped dead in his tracks. His smile vanished instantly, replaced by a dark, dangerous scowl. He had armed the security system before leaving for dinner; motion sensors should have triggered an alert on his phone if anyone had entered the estate. Unless...
Beate.
Rage flared hot and fast in his chest. So the little ungrateful bitch had found enough courage to crawl out of her room while he was gone, had she? After everything he taught her, after fifty calculated strikes with the belt to remind her of her place, she was still trying to defy him?
“Beate,” Gero called out, his voice dropping into a harsh, venomous snarl as he pushed the study door wide open. “You pathetic, disobedient little fool. Did you really think—?”
He stopped talking.
Standing in the center of the study, illuminated by the pale moonlight filtering through the French windows, was not Beate.
It was a tall, imposing man with silver-gray hair, broad shoulders, and eyes that burned with the cold, unyielding fury of an executioner.
Thomas Brand.
For three seconds, the air in the room froze. Gero’s color drained entirely from his face, his eyes widening in sudden, unadulterated shock as he recognized the retired Bundeswehr officer standing before him inside his private sanctuary.
“You...” Gero choked out, stumbling back a half-step before instinctively trying to recover his arrogant composure. “What the hell are you doing in my house? This is breaking and entering! I'll have you arrested before you can walk out that front door!”
Thomas didn't move an inch. He slowly lowered his hand from the open safe, holding the velvet box containing Beate’s heirloom necklace in one palm. His posture remained rigidly upright, military-grade discipline holding his explosive rage on a razor-thin leash.
“Your house?” Thomas’s voice was dangerously quiet, cutting through the silence like a scalpel. “You call this a house? To me, Gero, this looks like a cage built by a coward who beats pregnant women because he is too weak to face a real opponent.”
Gero’s face contorted into an ugly grimace. The mask of charm and sophistication shattered completely, revealing the violent, insecure tyrant underneath.
“She told you,” Gero hissed, his fists clenching at his sides. “That ungrateful, whiny bitch couldn't even take a simple lesson without running to her daddy like a baby. And what are you going to do about it, old man? Beat me? Sue me? You have no jurisdiction here. My lawyers will tear you and your precious daughter to pieces in family court before you can even blink.”
Gero lunged toward the mahogany desk, his hand diving into the top drawer where he kept a heavy brass paperweight and a concealed panic button linked directly to a private security firm.
He never made it.
In a blur of motion born from decades of elite combat training, Thomas closed the distance between them in less than a second. With blinding speed, Thomas slammed his forearm against Gero’s chest, driving the younger man backward with crushing force until Gero slammed hard against the oak bookshelf, books tumbling down around them in a chaotic avalanche.
Before Gero could recover his breath, Thomas grabbed him by the expensive silk collar of his shirt, lifting him slightly off the floor until their eyes met levelly.
“You made three fatal mistakes, Gero,” Thomas whispered, his voice dangerously close to Gero’s ear. “First, you laid your hands on my daughter. Second, you thought you could hide behind your money and your lawyers. And third... you forgot that a soldier never leaves his family behind.”
Before Gero could swing a punch in retaliation, the heavy front doors of the estate burst open with a resounding crash.

“Police! Federal warrant! Nobody move!”
Detective Brenner’s voice echoed through the vaulted ceilings, followed by the heavy boots of half a dozen armed officers swarming the hallway.
