Chapter 1 - The Gathering Storm

The sterile scent of the medical clinic felt like a sanctuary compared to the suffocating walls of the home Beate shared with Gero. Detective Sarah Brenner stood by the door, her notebook open, while Dr. Patrizia Richter carefully adjusted a blanket around Beate’s trembling shoulders. Thomas Brand, retired Bundeswehr officer and a man whose presence commanded absolute discipline, stood frozen beside his daughter’s chair.
When Thomas had looked at the smartphone screen and witnessed his seven-month-pregnant daughter being beaten with calculated cruelty, the hardened soldier inside him had snapped. Decades of tactical training, emotional control, and disciplined restraint vanished, replaced by a cold, searing fury that burned deeper than any fire.
“What happens to Gero now?” Thomas asked again, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous register that made Detective Brenner look up sharply.
“Mr. Brand,” Detective Brenner said carefully, closing the distance between them. “Your daughter has provided ironclad evidence. The nursery camera captured premeditated abuse, aggravated assault against a pregnant woman, and endangerment. Under normal circumstances, we would issue a warrant, track his location, and bring him in for questioning within a few hours. But given his prominent standing in the community, we need to move strategically so he doesn't destroy assets, flee jurisdiction, or fabricate an alibi.”
Thomas’s eyes narrowed. He thought of Gero’s public persona—the charming, wealthy corporate executive who dined with city council members, funded charity galas, and played the loving, devoted husband to perfection. To the outside world, Gero von Berg was a pillar of success. Inside closed doors, he was a monster who used a leather belt to enforce obedience over fifteen minutes of delayed dinner.
“We don’t wait hours,” Thomas said, his tone flat and unyielding. “A man like Gero builds networks of influence. He has lawyers, financial buffers, and associates who will lie to protect his reputation. If we give him sixty seconds to realize the trap is closing, he will weaponize every dollar and connection he has.”
Beate clutched her father’s sleeve. “Papa, be careful. He knows powerful people. He told me that if I ever spoke out, nobody would believe me. He said my word meant nothing against his.”
Detective Brenner pulled a tablet from her tactical vest, tapping the screen to display a live GPS map overlay. “Your daughter is right about his network. Gero is currently dining at the Metropole with Rüdiger Voss, the senior partner of Voss & Associates—one of the largest corporate defense firms in the state. If Gero senses danger, Voss will have him on a private charter flight out of the country before midnight.”
Thomas stared at the map. A slow, terrifying calm settled over his features. The military strategist in him took over. When an enemy holds the high ground, you do not launch a frontal assault; you cut off their lines of retreat, isolate their command center, and strike with absolute, overwhelming force.
“He thinks he is untouchable,” Thomas murmured, stepping toward the window that looked out over the courtyard. “He believes he has caged my daughter and silenced her forever. He is about to learn what happens when a wolf wakes up to find a predator in his den.”

“Mr. Brand, you must let law enforcement handle the apprehension,” Detective Brenner warned, sensing the lethal resolve radiating from the older man. “Any unauthorized confrontation could compromise the chain of custody or give his defense team a loophole.”
“I am not going to touch him, Detective,” Thomas replied, his voice devoid of warmth. “I am simply going to ensure he has nowhere left to run.”
