Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Titan

The flashlights cut through the dim interior of the study, blindingly bright beams locking onto the tableau before them. Gero von Berg was pinned against the bookshelf by Thomas Brand, his expensive suit wrinkled, his face red with a mixture of suffocating rage and sudden, creeping panic.

“Hold your positions! Let go of the suspect, Mr. Brand!” Detective Brenner shouted, stepping into the room with her hand resting firmly on her holster, followed closely by two uniformed officers.

Thomas slowly loosened his grip, letting Gero drop back onto his feet. Thomas stepped back, dusting off his cuffs as if he had just handled a piece of trash.

Gero staggered forward, gasping for air, his eyes wild with desperate indignation. He immediately put on a theatrical display of outraged victimhood, pointing a shaking finger at Thomas.

“Arrest him!” Gero screamed at Detective Brenner, his voice cracking with hysteria. “He broke into my home! He assaulted me! Look at what he did! This is criminal trespassing and home invasion! I want him in handcuffs right now!”

Detective Brenner didn't even blink. She pulled out a pair of steel handcuffs from her belt, stepped right past Gero, and grabbed his wrists with practiced efficiency, snapping the cuffs tight behind his back with a sharp click.

Gero went rigid, his eyes bulging in sheer disbelief as cold steel bit into his skin.

“What are you doing? Have you lost your mind? Do you know who I am? I am Gero von Berg! I sit on the city development board! Call Rüdiger Voss right now—he’ll have your badge by morning!” Gero shrieked, thrashing against the officers as they forced him down onto his knees to read him his rights.

Detective Brenner stepped close to his ear, her voice dripping with absolute contempt.

“Gero von Berg, you are under arrest for felony domestic abuse, aggravated assault of a pregnant woman, violation of restraining orders, and witness intimidation. And as for your friend Rüdiger Voss? His firm just dropped your legal representation ten minutes ago when our financial crimes unit flagged his accounts for money laundering tied to your shell companies.”

Gero’s legs went weak under him. The color drained completely from his face, leaving him looking hollow, defeated, and profoundly small. Every pillar of power, money, and influence he had spent years constructing had collapsed around him in less than twenty minutes.

As officers hauled him toward the front entrance in handcuffs, past the grand chandelier and the marble foyer he had used to project a false kingdom of perfection, Gero caught sight of his own reflection in the hallway mirror.

He wasn't a powerful executive anymore. He was just a coward wearing a ruined suit.

As the squad cars outside lit up the quiet neighborhood with flashing red and blue lights, Thomas Brand walked out onto the front porch, pulling out his phone to call his daughter.

“It’s over, Beate,” Thomas said gently, looking out at the night sky. “The monster is caged. You can finally come home.”
