Chapter 76 - The Phantom Transmission

The nixie tubes flickered from green to a harsh, blinding orange.
A loud mechanical clack resonated from the wall behind the coin presses. A bank of reel-to-reel magnetic tape decks, encased in pressurized nitrogen housings, began to spin with a high-pitched hiss.
A loudspeaker, crackling with decades of static, cleared its throat.
*"If this playback is engaged,"* the voice spoke—dry, aristocratically brittle, carrying the unmistakable cadence of Leopold Whitmore in his late sixties—*"then Arthur has failed. Or Donald has proved as cowardly as his father was."*
Donald let out a choked sound and dropped his weapon completely. It clattered against the iron floor, spinning until it came to rest against Julian’s boot. Julian kicked it away without looking.
*"My granddaughter,"* the tape continued, the voice steady, recorded on some long-forgotten afternoon in a paneled study on Cape Cod. *"You are the only one who could have reached this terminal without Richard Vance’s master key. You reached it because you understood that the ledger was not an instrument of power. It was an instrument of exposure."*
"He knew," Vance muttered, sinking to his knees on the cold floor. "The old man knew forty years ago."
*"The family believed the dinner table was a fortress,"* Leopold’s recorded voice droned on, cold and merciless. *"They believed that cruelty within the bloodline was a private prerogative. They were fools. A dynasty that requires the humiliation of its own blood to sustain its pride is already dead. It merely lacks the decency to rot in silence."*
The reel clicked. A pneumatic solenoid fired with a sharp *thwack*.
*"Step One was the severance of the offshore accounts on Cape Cod. Step Two was the breach of the Zurich records. Step Three is the sovereign liquidation."*
The nixie tubes began to cycle through numbers at blinding speed.
`ACCOUNT: 001-FEDERAL-RECEIVER-NY ... AUTHORIZED`
`ACCOUNT: 004-UK-TREASURY-ESCROW ... AUTHORIZED`
`ACCOUNT: 012-PENSION-SETTLEMENT-FUND ... AUTHORIZED`
"No!" Donald screamed, lunging toward the console. "Stop it! That’s our estate! That’s the entire Whitmore trust! If that transfers, we have nothing left to negotiate with! We’ll be bankrupt! We’ll be *ordinary*!"
Julian caught Donald by the throat with one arm, slamming him against the side of a five-ton coin press with effortless precision. Donald choked, his legs kicking uselessly against the iron framing.
"You were always ordinary, Donald," Julian said into his ear, his voice freezing cold. "You were just expensive."
*"Elena,"* Leopold's voice softened slightly on the magnetic tape, a faint trace of humanity bleeding through the static. *"The folder you built—the one you called FAMILY NIGHT—was not an act of revenge. It was the audit I never had the courage to run. The gravy Arthur poured on you was the last dividend the Whitmore family will ever pay."*
A heavy red mechanical toggle lever popped out from the brass control panel with a sharp chime.
`EXECUTE: THE SCYTHE TERMINATION.`
"Do it, Elena," Julian said, still holding Donald pinned against the press.
I looked at the lever. I looked at Donald, whose face was purple, snot and tears running down his chin, his bespoke clothes ruined by sea brine and hydraulic grease. I looked at Vance, who was staring at his manicured hands as if they belonged to a corpse.
"This is for my mother," I whispered.
May you like
I grabbed the heavy red lever and pulled it down.
