Chapter 74 - The Original Die

The descent into Vault Zero was like dropping through the esophagus of an industrial empire.

A spiral iron staircase, bolted into circular granite rings that went forty meters into the seabed, echoed with the sound of our boots. Water dripped constantly from the walls—not fresh leaks, but the condensation of eight decades of compressed humidity.

Donald, Vance, and their hired muscle had tumbled down ahead of us, their flashlight beams swinging wildly through the dark. Julian and I followed, our weapons drawn, our senses tuned to the low, subterranean thrumming that lived inside the stone.

At the bottom of the spiral shaft, the granite gave way to solid sheets of riveted Krupp armor steel.

Above the central archway, carved into a slab of tarnished brass, were the words:

*THE IMPERIAL & TRANSATLANTIC BULLION CORPORATION — 1939*

*DIE MARK: ZERO*

We stepped into a chamber the size of a cathedral nave.

The beam of my lantern swept across towering racks of heavy cast-iron machinery. These were not digital servers like the Zurich vault, nor were they the paper archive boxes of Vault 001.

They were coin presses. Massive, five-ton mechanical stamping presses bearing the manufacturer plates of Birmingham and Essen, frozen in time under coats of thick paraffin wax. And stacked around them, reaching twenty feet toward the vaulted ceiling, were thousands of wooden crates bound in rusted iron strapping.

Vance was already on his knees beside one of the broken crates, his trembling hands digging through straw packaging.

He pulled out a heavy, dull-yellow bar. It wasn't modern 99.99% pure gold with clean laser-etched serial numbers. It was rough, hand-poured, bearing the dual stamp of the Bank of England and the private crest of the Whitmore Syndicate: an eagle clutching a pair of crossed scythes.

"It's all here," Vance sobbed, laughing hysterically as tears tracked through the grime on his cheeks. "The entire pre-Bretton Woods sovereign pool. It wasn't recorded on the international settlements ledger. It was written off as lost at sea during the U-boat blitz of 1940! It's worth twelve billion at current spot price!"

"Look closer, Vance," Julian’s voice echoed sharply across the cavernous room.

Vance froze. Donald spun around, clutching an emergency flare like a weapon, the crimson smoke curling violently around his head.

"Stay back!" Donald yelled. "Vance has the master clearance! We can transfer the title to the Lisbon trust!"

"There is no title to transfer," Julian said, stepping into the circle of red light, his weapon lowered at his hip. "Look at the master die on the central press."

I walked slowly past the rows of presses until I reached the elevated control platform in the center of the hall.

There sat the primary stamping station. Embedded in the hydraulic ram was a massive tungsten carbide die. It wasn't cut to stamp bullion bars.

It was cut to stamp bearer bonds.

And on the lower work table, preserved under a sealed glass bell jar, lay the master parchment that Leopold Whitmore had signed on October 14, 1939.

I lifted the heavy glass cover. The air inside smelled of old ozone and bitter almonds.

I read the opening paragraph of Leopold’s handwritten covenant:

*“Be it known to all heirs of the bloodline: this reserve does not exist to preserve the dynasty. It exists to extinguish it. Should the family ledger ever fall into public view, or the trust be breached by internal division, the master switch herein shall flood the caissons, nullifying the debt by returning the gold to the sea floor, leaving the creditors to devour the flesh of the survivors.”*

Donald’s face went dead white as the words bounced back from the damp iron walls.

"Extinguish?" Donald gasped, dropping the flare onto the wet concrete. "No... no, grandfather wouldn't... he built the company! He made us!"

May you like

"He knew what you were," I said softly, looking at my cousin's hollow, panicked eyes. "He knew what three generations of unearned wealth would turn his bloodline into. He knew you would eat each other alive."
