Chapter 6 - The Police and the Paper Trail

By Tuesday morning, the scandal had broken past local wedding gossip and splashed across the business pages of the regional newspapers.

LOCAL DEVELOPER ARRESTED ON FRAUD AND ASSAULT CHARGES AFTER DAUGHTER'S WEDDING BRAWL.

The headline was brutal, accompanied by a mugshot of Robert Dawson looking bewildered and furious beneath harsh precinct lighting. Inside the corporate offices of Dawson Construction, things were collapsing even faster than the news cycle could print.

With Robert behind bars and unable to post bail—thanks to the judge citing severe financial flight risks and a trail of hidden offshore debts—the company’s primary lenders panicked. Creditors swarmed the office, demanding immediate loan repayments. Employees arrived at work to find the doors locked by court order while federal investigators began auditing the company's books.

I was discharged from the hospital on Monday afternoon, returning not to my parents' chaotic suburban home, but straight to Aunt June’s lake house.

The moment I unlocked the front door and stepped into the sunlit foyer, the heavy tension in my shoulders began to melt away. The scent of polished cedar, pine needles, and lake water filled my lungs. Here, away from the flashing lights, the hospital monitors, and the toxic gravitational pull of my parents' demands, the world felt quiet and safe.

Eric and Lily drove out on Tuesday evening to check on me, bringing takeout Thai food and a bottle of expensive wine that Lily refused to drink herself out of solidarity.

"Mom won't answer her phone," Lily announced as she kicked off her designer heels by the door and sank into the plush living room sofa. "She’s holed up in the house, telling reporters outside that it’s all a misunderstanding orchestrated by disgruntled corporate rivals."

"She’s in denial," Eric said gently, setting the food down on the coffee table. He looked at my bandaged face with deep remorse. "Natalie, I'm still so sorry. If I hadn't invited Adrian to the wedding—"

"Stop right there, Eric," I interrupted, managing a small, pained smile. "If you hadn't invited Adrian, and if you hadn't checked that hallway security camera, my father might have successfully bullied me into signing over this house, and then thrown me under the bus for his financial crimes anyway. You saved me."

Lily reached across the table and squeezed my uninjured hand. "What are you going to do about the house, Nat? Dad tried to file a secondary deed claim through his lawyer this morning."

"His lawyer is about to be disbarred for submitting forged documents," I replied calmly, taking a bite of spring rolls. "Adrian's legal team has already filed a restraining order and a permanent injunction blocking Robert from making any legal claims against my trust. Aunt June’s lawyers structured this house so tightly that even a bankruptcy court can't touch it."

As if summoned by the conversation, my phone buzzed on the coffee table. It was an email notification from Adrian Mercer.
