Chapter 4 - The Public Unmasking

Back at the St. Claire Hotel ballroom, the festive mood had curdled into a suffocating mixture of confusion and dread.

Robert Dawson had been basking in the glow of Adrian Mercer's sudden, unexpected arrival, utterly blind to the storm gathering overhead. When Adrian had walked into the reception earlier that evening, Robert had rushed forward with a hand outstretched, his voice booming across the silent room.

"Adrian! My boy! I didn't think you'd make it past the board meeting!" Robert had beamed, oblivious to the fact that Adrian had completely ignored his outstretched hand.

Adrian hadn't taken it. Instead, he had stopped two feet away, towering over my father with an icy disdain that made several wedding guests take an involuntary step backward.

"I've seen the footage, Mr. Dawson," Adrian had said, his voice carrying clearly across the silent ballroom.

Robert’s triumphant smile had faltered, twitching at the corners. "Footage? What—what footage? The wedding dance? Eric must have shown you—"

My mother had hurried over, her face pale under layers of designer makeup, clutching a glass of champagne like a lifeline. "Adrian, darling, you must be exhausted. Let’s get you a drink, and Robert can show you the blueprints for the new—"

"And I've seen the letter you submitted with your bid, Mr. Dawson," Adrian continued, cutting straight through my mother's nervous chatter. His voice rose slightly, echoing off the crystal chandeliers. "The official financial guarantee claiming your daughter, Natalie, willingly agreed to pledge her lake house as collateral for your failing construction firm."

Robert’s face drained of color, the triumphant purple flush instantly replaced by a sickly, pasty grey. "That... that's a misunderstanding. Natalie and I... we discussed it. It's a family arrangement—"

"A family arrangement involving assault, forgery, and grand larceny?" Adrian interrupted, stepping forward until Robert was forced to retreat a step. "Because the security footage from the service hallway shows a very different kind of arrangement. It shows you demanding property that does not belong to you, and when your daughter rightfully refused, you struck her with enough force to shatter her cheekbone and send her to the emergency room in an ambulance."

A collective gasp swept through the ballroom. Whispers erupted among the assembled guests, aunts dropping their forks, cousins staring in horror, and friends murmuring in disbelief. Lily, standing stunned in her heavy white wedding gown beside Eric, clapped a hand over her mouth, tears suddenly spilling down her cheeks as the awful puzzle pieces clicked into place.

"That's a lie!" Robert roared, his panic overriding his common sense as he lunged forward. "She fell! She was drunk and she tripped! That ungrateful bitch fabricated this to ruin my company!"

"Mr. Dawson," a cold, calm voice cut through the shouting from the double doors of the ballroom.

Two uniformed police officers, accompanied by a detective in plainclothes, stepped smoothly into the room. The detective held up an arrest warrant, the paper gleaming under the chandeliers.

"Robert Dawson, you are under arrest for suspicion of felony assault, domestic battery, and corporate fraud. Turn around and place your hands behind your back."
