Chapter 5 - Fallout and Family Fractures

The chaos that followed the police officers stepping into the ballroom was nothing short of apocalyptic.
Tables rattled as guests scrambled to clear a path. My mother dissolved into hysterical shrieks, collapsing into a chair while shouting incoherent defenses about how her husband was an honest man, a pillar of the community, a victim of a malicious conspiracy. But no one came to her aid; even our closest relatives shrank away, suddenly finding the intricate patterns on the carpet fascinating.
Lily stood frozen near the head table, her exquisite lace wedding dress feeling less like a garment of celebration and more like a straitjacket of humiliation. Eric stood firmly beside her, his arm wrapped tightly around her shaking waist, shielding her from the flashing cameras of scandal-hungry wedding bloggers who had somehow caught wind of the commotion.
"I'm so sorry, Lily," Eric whispered into her hair, pressing a gentle kiss to her temple. "I couldn't let him get away with hurting Natalie. What he did in that hallway crossed every line."
Lily sniffled, wiping away her tears with the back of her manicured hand, careful not to ruin her makeup. "You did the right thing, Eric. I love my dad, but... but he went too far. He’s been destroying our family for years, and tonight he nearly killed my sister."
Back at the hospital, I was watching a live-streamed video clip sent by Eric on my phone, my heart hammering against my ribs as I watched my father being led out of the hotel ballroom in handcuffs, his face twisted in a mask of furious denial as the police pushed him toward the squad cars.
The door to my hospital room opened again, and Adrian Mercer stepped back inside, holding a paper cup of lukewarm black coffee. He handed it to me gently before pulling his chair back up.
"It's done," Adrian said quietly, reading the tension in my posture. "Your father has been booked at the central precinct. Bail will be set tomorrow morning, but given the video evidence and the falsified corporate documents, the district attorney is pushing for no-bail hold due to flight risk and witness intimidation."
I took a small, cautious sip of the bitter coffee, letting the warmth steady my nerves. "Thank you, Adrian. I... I never imagined it would blow up quite like this at Lily's wedding."
"Your father orchestrated his own destruction, Natalie," Adrian said, his grey eyes softening slightly as he looked at me. "For years, people in his orbit have cleaned up his messes, covered for his debts, and absorbed his collateral damage. Someone had to let the floor collapse beneath him so he couldn't drag anyone else down."
"My mother is probably losing her mind right now," I murmured, staring down at my bandaged hands. "She's spent her entire life enabling him."
"Your mother will have to face reality, just like he does," Adrian replied firmly. "And as for you, your only job right now is to heal. Take as much time off as you need. The Mercer waterfront project is secure, and your position as senior project director isn't going anywhere. In fact..." He paused, a faint, approving smile touching the corners of his mouth. "...when you return, we need to discuss restructuring the entire regional development division under your direct leadership."

I looked up, stunned. "My leadership?"
"You saved the architectural integrity of three major developments last year despite your father’s constant interference," Adrian noted matter-of-factly. "You have the talent, the spine, and the vision. It’s time you stepped out of the shadow of your family's dysfunction entirely."
