Chapter 10 - A New Horizon

A year after the chaos at the St. Claire Hotel, autumn had returned to Michigan, painting the woods around Aunt June’s lake house in those familiar, breathtaking shades of gold and amber.
The wrap-around wooden porch was freshly stained, the flower beds were overflowing with hardy perennials, and the interior smelled of fresh coffee and roasted cedar.
I stood on the back deck, leaning against the railing with a mug of hot coffee in my hands, watching the sunlight dance across the ripples of Lake Michigan. My phone buzzed in the pocket of my cardigan. It was a photo text from Lily in Rome—she and Eric standing in front of the Colosseum, grinning ear to ear, looking happier and more grounded than I had ever seen them.
Life had stabilized in ways I never could have imagined during those dark hours in the emergency room. At Mercer Industries, I had been officially promoted to Executive Vice President of Regional Development, steering major sustainable architectural projects across the Midwest.
A pair of warm, familiar arms slipped around my waist from behind, resting comfortably against my stomach. A chin settled gently onto my shoulder.
"Thinking about work, or thinking about dinner?" Adrian murmured, his breath warm against my neck.
I leaned back into his embrace, turning my head slightly to press a kiss to his cheek. "Neither. I was just thinking about how strange life is. A year ago, I thought my world was ending in a hospital hallway."
Adrian tightened his grip, turning me around slowly so I was facing him. His grey eyes were filled with an unconditional warmth and deep affection that still made my heart skip a beat.
"Your world wasn't ending, Natalie," he said softly, reaching up to gently trace the unblemished skin of my cheek where the bruise used to be. "It was just clearing out the wreckage so you could finally build the life you actually deserved."
"And you happened to be the one holding the wrecking ball," I teased, a smile tugging at the corners of my lips.
"Somebody had to do the heavy lifting," Adrian laughed, leaning down to press his lips softly against mine.

The kiss deepened, sweet and unhurried, grounded by the quiet strength of the man who stood beside me and the sanctuary of the home I had fought so hard to keep. Down on the dock, the waves gently lapped against the wooden pilings, singing a steady, peaceful rhythm.
The past was behind us. The future was ours to build.
