Chapter 8 - Father and Daughter

Back at St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital, the rain had finally stopped, replaced by a pale, golden afternoon sun that pierced through the clouds and streamed into Chloe's room.
The security detail outside the door had been quietly dismissed, replaced by the quiet hum of recovery. Chloe was sitting up slightly in her bed, propped up by pillows. Her jaw was still wired, and the purple bruises around her eyes were stark against her pale skin, but for the first time in days, there was a spark of life in her eyes.
The door clicked open, and Alexander walked in, carrying a small vase of fresh white lilies.
He set them gently on the bedside table, pulled up his chair, and looked at her with a tender, infinite warmth that he reserved for her alone.
"How are you feeling, sweetheart?" he asked softly.
Chloe reached out, her fingers touching his hand. She picked up a small plastic writing tablet from her lap and slowly scrawled a message with a marker:
Are you safe, Dad? They said his family is powerful.
Alexander smiled gently, shaking his head. He placed a reassuring hand over hers.
"The Holbrook family is no longer a threat," Alexander said calmly. "Wyatt was arrested two hours ago. Federal agents are currently dismantling his father's company. No one will ever touch you again, Chloe. I promise you that."
Chloe stared at him, her eyes wide with a mixture of shock and profound relief. She wrote another line on the pad:
Who are you really, Dad? You aren't just a security consultant.
Alexander looked down at the words. For nineteen years, he had kept the ghosts buried. He had traded the shadow wars of Task Force Vanguard for the quiet, peaceful life of a father raising his daughter. But looking at Chloe now, bruised, battered, and surviving against impossible odds, he realized something important.
He didn't need to hide anymore. The Phantom Commander had only returned because a father had called him forth.

"I'm your dad," Alexander said softly, squeezing her hand. "And that's all I'll ever need to be."
Chloe managed a faint, tired smile beneath her bandages, pressing her head back against the pillow as a profound sense of peace finally settled over the room.
