Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Mansion

High above the city, in the sprawling limestone-and-glass fortress of the Holbrook estate, Wyatt Holbrook poured himself a glass of neat twenty-year-old scotch. The amber liquid swirled against the crystal tumbler as he stared out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the sprawling skyline below. He was wearing a custom-tailored silk bathrobe, his blond hair perfectly styled despite the late hour.
There was a soft knock at the door, and his personal attorney, Marcus Vance—no relation to Alexander—stepped into the study. Marcus looked nervous, clutching a leather briefcase like a shield.
"The hospital report has been amended, Mr. Holbrook," Marcus said quietly, avoiding Wyatt's eyes. "The local precinct captain handled the responding officers. The official narrative is locked in: severe domestic accident resulting from an unfortunate fall down the grand staircase while intoxicated."
Wyatt took a slow sip of his scotch, a smug, cruel smile touching the corners of his mouth. "I told you there was nothing to worry about, Marcus. People like the Sterlings live in a different world. Her old man fixes security cameras for strip malls and jewelry stores. What is he going to do? Hire a lawyer? Sue me?"
"His father-in-law was present at the hospital," Marcus warned, adjusting his glasses. "Alexander Sterling. He didn't yell. He didn't cry. He just stood there staring at the X-rays. There was something... unsettling about him. My contacts in the precinct mentioned that he looked at the lead detective with a calmness that made everyone in the room uneasy."
"An old man whose spirit is already broken," Wyatt scoffed, setting his glass down with a sharp clink on the mahogany desk. "Chloe thought she could stand up to me. She threatened to walk away, take half my assets, and expose some of our business contracts. She needed to be reminded of her place. Her father is nothing more than a pathetic relic."
What Wyatt Holbrook did not know was that two miles away, parked in an unmarked van parked completely out of sight of the estate's motion sensors, a former Vanguard surveillance specialist named Miller was watching every thermal signature inside the mansion.
"Target confirmed," Miller whispered into a discreet throat-mic, his fingers flying across a ruggedized military laptop. "Arrogant, drinking scotch, completely unaware that his security system was bypassed twelve minutes ago."

"Copy that, Miller," Julian’s voice crackled through the secure comms channel. "Maintain observation. Do not engage. The Commander wants the full web mapped out before we cut the strings."
Inside the mansion, Wyatt laughed softly to himself, turning off the study lights and heading toward his master suite, completely oblivious to the fact that the invisible walls he had built around himself were already turning to dust.
