Chapter 3 - The Audit of the Century

At 3:15 a.m., deep within the subterranean server rooms of Aegis Defense Technologies, a silent digital earthquake occurred.
Task Force Vanguard’s cyber warfare specialist, a former NSA contractor known only as "Ghost," bypassed the multi-billion-dollar corporation's firewall in less than four seconds. It wasn't brute force; it was a ghost protocol that slipped through an unpatched legacy backdoor left open during a Department of Defense software integration five years earlier.
"I'm in," Ghost typed into the encrypted group chat monitored by Julian and Alexander.
"Status?" Julian’s text flashed instantly.
"Accessing financial ledgers, political slush funds, and overseas accounts. Senator Margaret Holbrook's campaign contributions are deeply intertwined with Aegis black-budget overruns. There are millions funneled through offshore shell companies in the Caymans. More importantly..." A pause hung on the screen for three agonizing seconds. "...I found the communication logs between Wyatt Holbrook and the city's district attorney regarding dropped corruption charges from two years ago."
"Secure every byte," Alexander’s voice came through a secure audio bridge, low and cold as winter wind. "Download the raw data banks. I want copies of every bribe, every rigged contract, and every suppressed police report."
"Copy," Ghost replied. "Initiating full extraction. It will take forty-eight minutes. Shall I leave a signature?"
"No," Alexander said. "Ghosts don't leave footprints. We want them to feel safe until the exact second the trap closes."
Meanwhile, in the hospital room, Alexander watched the steady rise and fall of Chloe’s chest. Her eyelids flickered, and she let out a soft moan of pain through her wired jaw. Alexander immediately leaned forward, pressing a cool, damp cloth against her forehead.
"I'm here, sweetheart," he murmured, his voice softening into the gentle tone he had used every day of her life. "You're safe. Daddy's got you. No one will ever hurt you again."
May you like
Chloe’s eyes opened slightly, filled with a mixture of terror and lingering trauma. She tried to speak, but the wires held her jaw firm. A single tear tracked down her bruised cheek.
"Don't try to talk," Alexander whispered, gently kissing her knuckles. "Just rest. The men who did this are going to learn what true fear feels like."
