Chapter 9 - Rebuilding the Foundation

As the weeks rolled into autumn, the shockwaves of the aborted wedding slowly faded into the background hum of New York society.

Julian, stripped of his illusion of wealth and abandoned by his social circle, was forced to move back into their parents' suburban home—a humbling descent for a man who had spent his entire life looking down on his older brother. Without Arthur’s secret subsidies to cover their property taxes and lifestyle inflation, Robert and Helen Vance were forced to downsize their country club memberships and quietly sell off a secondary investment property to stay afloat.

They never called to apologize. Accountability was a currency the Vance parents simply did not possess. To admit fault would mean acknowledging that their golden-boy philosophy had been a catastrophic failure, while the son they had treated as a walking wallet was the only true pillar holding the family name upright.

Arthur, however, did not wait for an apology that would never come.

With his promotion to Senior Vice President securely under his belt, he poured his immense focus into his career and his personal life. He enrolled in an elite executive leadership retreat, took up competitive rowing on the weekends along the Hudson, and surrounded himself with peers and colleagues who valued him for his intellect, his loyalty, and his character—not for the balance in his checkbook.

He learned to establish ironclad boundaries. When a distant cousin reached out via email hinting at a "temporary financial emergency," Arthur didn't even bother replying; he simply set the email filter to auto-archive.

The days of being the family ATM were gone, buried beneath the cancellation records of Cedar Grove Estate.
