Chapter 7 - Friday Morning, Forty-Second Floor

Friday morning dawned crisp and clear over the New York skyline.

Arthur stood before his bedroom mirror, knotting a deep navy silk tie with immaculate precision. He checked his reflection—his posture was straight, his eyes clear, his expression completely unburdened by the parasitic weight he had carried for the past decade.

He didn't feel guilty. He didn't feel regret. He felt lighter than air.

When he stepped off the elevator on the forty-second floor of Vance Global Headquarters at 8:55 AM, the atmosphere in the executive suite felt entirely different from Monday’s tense standoff. The air smelled of freshly brewed artisanal coffee and quiet anticipation.

At 9:00 AM sharp, the double doors of the executive boardroom opened. Eleanor Vance stood at the threshold, holding a leather-bound folio.

"Arthur," she called out, a warm, approving smile touching her lips. "The promotion committee has concluded its review."

Arthur walked into the boardroom. The managing director and three senior partners were seated around the mahogany table. Unlike Monday, when their brows were furrowed in corporate anxiety, today they looked at Arthur with undisguised respect.

"We reviewed your crisis-management strategy from earlier in the week," the managing director began, folding his hands on the table. "We evaluated your composure under extreme market pressure, your analytical foresight, and your ability to execute decisive, unyielding strategies when capital exposure threatened the firm."

He paused, letting the silence build for dramatic effect before delivering the verdict.

"The board has voted unanimously. Effective immediately, you are appointed Senior Vice President of Global Financial Operations. At twenty-eight, you are the youngest executive to hold this title in the history of the firm."

A chorus of polite, genuine applause filled the boardroom. Eleanor stepped forward and extended her hand.

"Congratulations, Arthur. You earned every inch of this," she said firmly.

Arthur shook her hand, a calm, genuine smile finally breaking across his face. "Thank you, Eleanor. I am ready for the responsibility."
