Chapter 9 - Healing and Handiwork

The days following the shower brought a strange, liberating quiet. True to form, Mom and Lauren attempted the silent treatment, assuming Claire would eventually crack under the pressure of family alienation and come crawling back with an apology.
Instead, Claire experienced the most peaceful week her household had known in years.
Without the constant background noise of trying to manage everyone else's emotional expectations, Claire found herself engaging more deeply with Molly. They spent evenings sitting side by side on the living room rug—Molly working on a new, smaller blanket for her doll, and Claire sketching out ideas for a community heritage quilt she had always dreamed of starting.
The ivory christening gown rested safely back in its designated box in the master closet, no longer viewed as a heavy burden of anxiety, but as a symbol of artistic endurance and family integrity.
One evening, while helping Molly tidy up her yarn basket, Claire noticed a small, neatly folded note tucked beneath the pale blue blanket. She unfolded it. It was written in Molly’s careful, looping second-grade handwriting:
“I am proud of my blanket. Mommy is brave. We take care of our own things.”
A lump rose in Claire’s throat, and she had to blink rapidly to keep the tears from falling. She pulled Molly into a fierce, enveloping hug, burying her face in her daughter’s hair.

"You know what, sweetheart?" Claire whispered against her ear. "I think your blanket turned out to be the most special thing in that entire room."
Molly smiled brightly, hugging her mother back with all her might. "I know, Mom. I made it myself."
