Chapter 2 - The Echoes of Obligation

The drive to Lauren’s neighborhood was coated in a deceptive morning calm. In the back seat, Molly held her gift box with both hands, treating the cardboard container like a fragile vessel carrying precious cargo. In the trunk lay the garment box containing Grandma’s heirloom gown.

Just before leaving the house, Claire had received a clipped phone call from Lauren. “Please tell me you remembered it,” her sister had demanded, before adding instructions to stash the gown upstairs immediately upon arrival so that ordinary guests wouldn't dare touch it. A subtle prick of unease had rippled through Claire at the phrasing—“get Grandma's gown home”—implying permanent possession rather than a temporary loan. But true to a lifetime of conditioning, Claire had swallowed the warning flag, rationalizing Lauren’s stress as mere third-trimester anxiety.

Not every awkward phrase needed an investigation, Claire had told herself, stepping right into her lifelong role as the family's emotional shock absorber.

Upon arrival, the house buzzed with the vibrant, chaotic energy of an upscale baby shower. Pastel balloons framed the entryway, and a massive gift table groaned under the weight of designer bags and imported baby gear. Mom was already there, directing traffic with an air of practiced authority.

After greeting the room, Claire carried the garment box upstairs to the designated guest room, placing it quietly on a floral duvet. Downstairs, Molly stayed close to Claire's side, wide-eyed at the rows of commercial presents—automated swings, high-tech monitors, and imported cashmere booties that looked more like adult luxury wear than infant apparel.

"That looks like camping equipment," Molly whispered, pointing at an oversized diaper bag featuring tactical pockets and insulated bottle holders.

"Apparently, modern babies travel with a considerable amount of infrastructure," Claire whispered back, sharing a brief, grounding smile with her daughter.

Yet, beneath the polite laughter and polite small talk among the guests, the atmosphere felt charged. Claire watched the gift table like a hawk, acutely aware that the climax of the morning—the unboxing of Molly’s handmade blanket—was fast approaching.
