Chapter 6 - The Long Drive Back

The interior of the car felt like a sanctuary. Once the doors were securely shut and the air conditioning hummed to life, the oppressive weight of the shower environment melted away.
Claire settled into the driver's seat, glancing back in the rearview mirror. Molly was sitting quietly, cradling her pale blue blanket across her lap as if it were a wounded bird. She hadn't said a word since leaving the house, and the quiet grief in her posture tore at Claire's heart.
"Molly, honey," Claire said softly, turning around in her seat. "Look at me."
Molly raised her head, her eyes red-rimmed and swimming with unfallen tears.
"Your blanket is beautiful," Claire said firmly, making sure every word carried absolute conviction. "It took patience, creativity, and love to make. The fact that someone couldn't see its worth doesn't diminish its value one bit. Do you understand that?"
Molly sniffled, wiping her cheek with the back of her sleeve. "Aunt Lauren said it was junk."
"Aunt Lauren was wrong," Claire replied without hesitation. "And bringing it home was the right choice. Just like bringing Grandma's gown home was the right choice."
Molly looked down at the pale blue wool, her small fingers tracing a crooked row. A tiny, hesitant spark of comfort flickered back into her eyes. "Can we... can we still give it to someone who wants it?"
May you like
"We can do whatever you want with it," Claire promised, smiling gently. "Or you can keep it on your own bed to remind you of what you're capable of creating."
As Claire put the car in drive and pulled away from the curb, she felt a profound sense of lightness. For the first time in her life, she hadn't sacrificed her child's emotional well-being to appease her family's comfort. The mirror showed an open road ahead, free of the old, invisible chains.
