Chapter 7 - Unpacking the Truth

Back at home, the afternoon sun filtered softly through the living room windows, casting long, peaceful shadows across the floorboards. Instead of retreating into isolation, Claire decided to turn the afternoon into a celebration of resilience.

They placed the garment box on the dining table, and Claire finally lifted the lid. Inside, nestled beneath layers of aged, protective tissue paper, the ivory christening gown lay in pristine condition. The tiny seed pearls caught the light, gleaming with quiet dignity.

Molly stood beside Claire on a step stool, leaning over the edge of the table. "Did Grandma really make all these tiny stitches by hand?"

"Every single one," Claire said, running a finger gently over the hem of the lace. "She sat by the window just like this, hour after hour, because she wanted to make something that would last across generations. She didn't care about brand names or labels. She cared about legacy."

"Just like I made my blanket," Molly whispered, looking from the historic gown to her own small creation resting nearby.

"Exactly like that," Claire affirmed.

Suddenly, the front doorbell chimed, breaking the reflective silence. Claire froze, exchanging a cautious look with Molly. The phone in Claire’s pocket had been buzzing intermittently with hostile text messages from Lauren and demanding voice notes from Mom, all of which she had calmly ignored.

Taking a deep breath, Claire walked to the front door and opened it just a crack.

Standing on the porch was neither Lauren nor Mom, but a familiar, warm face: Aunt Clara—their mother’s older sister, who had lived on the other side of the state for years and had skipped the shower due to travel issues.

"Claire, darling," Aunt Clara said, her expression a mix of concern and fierce determination. "May I come in? I heard a heavily distorted version of events from your mother, so naturally, I drove straight over to find out what really happened."
